Hour long sermons?!?!

I went to an Anglican (Episcopalian) Church and I very much doubt the sermons would last more than 20 mins- usually related to the readings. I will say the series on Revelation and it's historical and metophorical context was great. We didnt go the literal interpretation route, thank God.

You are aware that you attend one of a myriad of Protestant Churches - yours is what we call American Pentecostal. There was a wave of that in Sydney in the early 1990s - but Australians won't put up with that amount of 'fire and brimstone' stuff.

It's amazing how much importance you people place in this kind of thing.

yeah, honesty is kind of a big thing with a lot of people.

More to the point, when Obama lies about his past identity with his own pastor of 20 years, it should come as no surprise that it bleeds into issues such as the validity of his birth certificate.

jmfcst is literally the only person here who thinks Obama's "Muslim schooling" is any type of issue at all.

But why does any politician owe anyone an explanation about personal matters? It borders a bit on obsession to want to know every little thing about these people.

If I ran for President I'd sum it up simply -  "I did almost everything, and if there's a rumor I did something else, I mostly likely did.  So shove it."

then he should have come out and said, "it's none of your business".  But when you outright lie about a 20 year religious affiliation, you can expect to have your integrity challenged on every facet of your personal life.

oh, and FYI, I've never heard anyone, even those on this forum, categorize my pastor as a "fire and brimstone" preacher

The tone of this thread suddenly makes me hungry for a burger from Flamer's.

even though I disavowal political correctness when it is used to hide truth, I see no reason for a business to choose a name that is nonPC.  I would also think it weird if they named it "hot heterosexual beef burgers" and certainly would not choose to eat there.  Now the "flamers" name may have been an innocent oversight, but it did cause me to consider the wisdom of the choice.

and, FYI, you're off topic, and that's against the TOS.

I don't spent much time with my Priest and am not extreemly devout in my religion, but I have been attending the same church with the same priest for the last ten years and I can honsetly say I know very little about his "world view other than that his is prolife.

…you obviously attend something like a Catholic church with a very ritualized form of service that is in most part prescribed statements and responses.  In protestant churches, the sermons usually last anywhere from 45 minutes to 60 minutes and are very free form, in that pastors speak what’s on their mind and many times the sermons delve into the social and political ills of the world.  And with BLT, the whole gospel is turned into a social struggle between blacks and whites and portrays Jesus as a black man being killed by white Romans.  And not only did Obama sit on the pew for 20 years, but he also spent thousands of hours with Wright outside of church working side by side within the community.  So, you can hardly compare your knowledge of your priest to a protestant’s knowledge of a pastor.

I am a Methodist whose father is Catholic.  I attended Catholic schools since I was four and was raised in a mixed Methodist/Catholic household.  I have attended both Methodist and Catholic services with my parents and can say that both the services and the Ministers are extremely similar, at lest in Western New York. Given this I can say that I have at least some knowledge of both Protestant and Catholic ministers and services.

And, so, based on that, you’re saying someone sitting under a BLT pastor for 20 years shouldn’t be expected to have an idea on the pastor’s world view?!  I guess you’re not aware of the fact BLT projects white repression of blacks into every facet of the Gospel to the point of claiming Jesus was a black man killed by white Romans.  It’s a tad difficult to miss that kind of baked in world view thingy.

It’s like a 20 year member of the KKK claiming he wasn’t aware of the grand dragon’s world view, for BLT is a racist hate-filled bastardization of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It’s Louis Farrakhan dressed up as a Christian.

You keep indicating that he's lying, but where are the facts to back that up? This is just yet another example of conservatives nitpicking over every little thing and making it into a huge issue.

if BLT was mirrored-imaged within a white church, you'd be calling its members racists...And it's not like Obama was raised in it, rather he chose it as an adult, which is far worse, and spent 20 years within it and only disassociated himself when some of the BLT comments of his pastor leaked out on tape and claimed he knew nothing about it.

For those not paying attention, jmfcst is doing what is known as 'trolling'. He might be doing it intentionally or unintentionally, but either way, the more you feed into the ever moving goalposts of his/her debate, the more you feed into their fantastic view of the world. jmfcst should by this point have demonstrated fully that they are not going to be convinced that the President isn't lying about something (what that is seems to change every 2-5 pages in this thread) and so your continued participation in their spasm isn't going to improve the situation.

Aka, get out now while you still have low blood pressure!

Being that the US Constitution explicitly says there is no religious test for office, the current thread derailment is irrelevant.

Returning to the actual topic

Some have questioned the timing of this but I think again the Occam's razor applies. The reason is exactly what Pres. Obama said it is, that he didn't like how this issue was getting in the way of his new message about how his budget plan is better than the House GOP budget plan. Obama is getting hammered in approval, mostly on gas prices, and the Dems think they have a real winner taking on the house and the GOP plan to turn medicare into a voucher program. We are already seeing some of this bubble up at town halls and Harry Reid is going to schedule a vote in the Senate for the GOP plan to make Republican Senators vote yeah or nay.

On Morning Joe this morning they were saying that some focus groups had shown that their "we have to protect medicare from the GOP" message works with elderly voters (who were the biggest supporters of the GOP in 2010 midterms), however the elderly also appeared to  be the most influenced by the birther stuff.

The question is: will the release work and help open up room to get to some of those 65+ voters.
