I like the idea but I think it's a little unnecessarily complicated. Why can't the Senate just determine this sort of thing from the start? If a law is that directly related to something else they should be able to tack it onto that right away. We don't need to encourage laziness on the Senate's part. Tongue

Makes sense to me, though Marokai has a valid point.

true, it makes sense for the Senate to determine that from the start. part of this bill is to have amendments and changes to existing bills be incorporated in the wiki. this will include not just new bills  but will also allow the AG to do this for already existing bills and changes to be incorporated in articles on bills that it supercedes so that people can see what laws are still in effect.

This would include more than just the CCJA and the CERA: tax bills, social programs, etc.

Wouldn't an amendment to the existing law be simpler then?

Not that I oppose the idea in principle.

Maybe it would be better, but I don't know if it's simpler because it seems like a slightly different concept and I'm not sure what language to use to amend it.

I am unsure that amending the existing law mentioned abovie  is the proper mover. Not saying it is a mistake either. This has a broaded scope then the Major Legislation Clarification act. However they both do something similar.

I just think having them both is redundant.

There are a couple of big, important pieces of legislation. The Consolidated Criminal Justice Act and the Consolidated Electoral Reform Act are two of the biggies relating to law, and are already dealt with by the existing law. And while we're talking about this, I think we should make an effort to have all laws relating to crime be amendments to the CCJA, etc., so as to keep things simple. Having 20 different acts relating to various crimes is just confusing. This is why I wanted the deletion bill turned into an amendment of the CCJA, to try and keep them all in one spot.

With that sad, this bill is a little wordy and confusing, so... Yeah...

Well its a been a week and nothing has happened here, does that mean a final vote is requested by virtue of your silence?

I was trying to see if there's a way to make this more simple or straightforward, but I don't have a good idea of how to do it.

Senator shua,

Have you come up with any ideas yet on the stated objective in your most recent post in this thread?

how about this?

Amendment to the Major Legislation Clarification Bill
The Attorney General shall have the authority to declare any bill passed into law to be accorded Major Legislation status, or to be considered an amendment to any such bill.  The Senate retains the right to override any declaration of Major legislation or amendment status by the Attorney General.

This when it really hits home how much of an ass-pain missing one day is. Normally I wait 24 hours before calling 24 hours to ensure the amendment has had adequate time on the floor to be seen. Missing one day turns that into 48. Tongue

Senators have 24 hours to object to the amendment.

Amendment is passed.

Shall we proceed to a final vote then?
