No, because dolphins are smart and cute, unlike Democrats.

I resent that!!

The Democratic Party is many things, but invincible isn't one of them.

Grab what they can and hunker down for half the year? Sounds more like the Libertarians.

But seriously--wolves are intelligent, social, loved by most Americans (except ranchers, who we aren't winning anyway) and unlike dolphins aren't serial rapists (though they do rip apart moose and bison).

Nor do they do what they want, no matter what others think. And as the narrator says Honey Badgers don't give a hoot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg

Wolves are absolutely beautiful animals.

I wonder if the Republicans mightn't also change to something that actually lives in the United States.

Perhaps they wouldn't be too averse to replacing their elephant with a grizzly:

Especially considering that gray wolves and grizzly bears are historic rivals.

Isn't the Grizzly the symbol of United Russia?

A possible alternative to the grizzly (if the GOP doesn't wish to be associated with our onetime enemy) would be the wolverine:

Unfortunately wolves have some fascist connotations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Wolves

I think there was a murderous Serbian paramilitary group with a similar name too.

I'd prefer both parties choose Pokémon instead of real animals.

Democrats: Milotic

Republicans: Muk

I like the wolves and grizzlies idea. If the Republicans use the wolverine, the Democrats should use something that doesn't begin with the same three letters.

In light of the "Should the Republican Party change its symbol from an elephant to an owl?" I thought I'd bump this.

Yes, of the bottlenose variety! I think it would nicely symbolize many principles of the party.

EDIT: And Republicans could use a shark!

The donkey and elephant are probably due for an update, though. I'm not crazy about either.
