I was watching The Passion of the Christ and came to the part in which the Jewish crowd shouts to release Barabas and crucify Jesus. It looked like a tyranny by majority democracy being in action there. So how does Christianity see democracy?

I'm honestly not sure what Christianity has to do with democracy.

That is about as profound as the argument that we should all hate Jews because they killed our Lord.  When things are handed over, completly to the will of the people, things do go wrongly.  Look at Socrates.  It is not a problem particular to Christianity.

Also, Jesus was to die that way.  It was already determined.

I know very few people that favor pure democracy.  We could not have a ballot question that said, for example, "O. J. Simpson shall be sentenced to life imprisonment for murder."

Christianity has tended to support the regime of the day, if that regime is not openly hostile to it.  It's more a giving unto Caesar situation.

I don't think any religion is really opposed to democracy. But religious fanaticism is.

Yes. Which is why we should ban religious based parties and give the military right of re-intervention for in the event of any religious based parties being elected.

Christianity, insofar as it is inherited dogma and not to be questioned by the masses, is as undemocratic as other world religions. This does not, of course, mean that Christians cannot function in a democratic manner, but that theism in the sense advocated by the desert monotheisms generally is undemocratic. Though many Christians will tell you that they take each word of the Bible literally, almost none actually do, and that allows them to operate democratically.

The letters from the apostles don't really talk about this, but Jesus says that one should do unto ceasar, which probably means to have your faith flexible withe your national identity.

It's "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's"... you're getting your Jesus quotes mixed up. Tongue

And, at least literally, he's just admonishing people for complaining about taxes.

Christianity takes no particular stance on what form of governance to use among men, save that they are all flawed compared to the divine rule that is to come.

I feel like mentioning the Taborites here. No reason; just think they were cool.

They seem interesting.. (Yes, I just wiki'd them to see what the hell you were talking about. Wink )

For the record, I'd pretty much agree with Ernest here. One could easily cherry pick quotes from bible to justify absolute monarch, republicanism, dictatorship and so on...
