The virtue of the vicious as Oscar  Wilde claimed or the basis of a well functioning society?

FI in itself, though its often used as an excuse for horrible policies.

A substitute for a self-generating identity. Socially, it is the collectivism of the capitalist.

Like most things, it's fine (good even) in small doses, bad if taken too far, horrible if taken to the extreme.

Definite FI, as long as you don't go too far, like for example, those who have the following on the back of their car/truck in my country (bugger is generally substituted with the f-bomb):

Too vague and subjective a term. Would need to be sufficiently defined for me to give a good answer.

Patriotism is more or less the equivalence of borders. Thus; horrible idea.

As-a-patriot; off-topic but perhaps pertinent:

Of course Johnson was not attacking all patriotism, just avowed (usually fake) patriotism.

Unless you were quoting Bob Dylan, then you just have bad taste. Tongue

If nationalism are the hillbilly you meet when your car break down in the countryside, who you don't know whether he's a kind hearted man of the soil or a cannibal-rapist. Patriotism are his rich cultivated uncle who you don't know whether he's a pillar of the community or a decadent owner of sex slave dungeon.

In most cases patriotism and nationalism are the former, but God help you if they're the latter.

Oh, I was quoting Johnson, not Bob Dylan. Tongue People who go out of the way to describe themselves as "patriots" and use the usual bombast that goes with that are almost always disgusting fakers, trying to make up for something that they in all actuality lack.

Nationalism is more genuine than patriotism in almost every instance, given that the latter is usually just some dickhead yelling about someone not wearing a flag pin that was made by 8 year olds in Vietnam.

Depends whether it's genuine. Few things annoy me more than rubbish "patriotic" displays such as when subjected to the Pledge of Allegiance before hearing a concert.
