If you define trend as how a state voted in relation to the nation, the state is trending slightly republican. In '04 it was about four points more democratic than the nation, in 2008 it was three points more democratic than the nation, in 2012 it was less than two points more democratic than the nation.

Which explains why Trump is near 50% in the state of Massachusetts, right?  Or are they just all "stupid"?  And Carson is the candidate of the Evangelical heartland far more than Trump.  Trump's appeal seems to be that he does very well in places with a large white, working class Catholic population.

OK, you win. I guess she was the incumbent Senator no, with reasonably popularity? Yes, I see that she was, and beat Sununu on the 2008 Obama wave, which was particularly strong in this area among others, and was thus the incumbent when facing a less congenial environment in 2014. Incumbency if the incumbent is reasonably competent, is worth about 3 points in my book, which was more than her margin, if I recall correctly. Her percentage eroded by a couple of points (if you give her a 3 point incumbency factor, that's a five point erosion), but needed to erode by a bit more to lose.

Shaheen won because she was an incumbent Senator with more than decent approval ratings. Against another opponent, she would have won by a larger margin, Brown gave her a run for her money despite his own mediocre approval numbers (due to the carpetbagger issue). It wasn't because NH is a solid D state.

Shaheen also underperformed in 2008 considering the environment and the fact that Sununu was regarded as one of the most vulnerable incumbents and for a while the most vulnerable incumbents of the whole cycle during much of 2007 and 2008.
