Well I'm sorry if I don't intimately know nicknames for prisons in Louisiana. The only Angola that I knew of before this is the country in southern Africa. I still don't get what "your in Switzerland you wouldn't know" factors into this.

Don't feel bad, I had no idea what the hell he was referring to either.

It's not a "nickname". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_State_Penitentiary

And it's one of the dozen or so US prisons I could name off the top of my head if you woke me up in the dead middle of night.

That sounds like a challenge.  You may expect me at any (night-)time within the next month.

Yeah, a dozen might be too high an estimate. I'm certain I'll get to at least half a dozen, though. Wink And yes, that'll include Angola.

State or federal?   Does 'Dead Man Walking' actually identify Angola?

San Quentin and Sing Sing and Attica and Joliet and Angola and McAlester and Canon City and Huntsville.

Angola was that prison where the guy's twentysomething-year conviction was overturned just recently, wasn't it?

You don't listen to southern music. Wink

Nor, apparently, have you seen Down By Law or read A Confederacy of Dunces.

Is there still a prison at Sugar Land?

Central unit is in Sugar Land,

Central Unit

But parts of movie were supposedly shot at the Jester Unit, which is between Sugar Land and Richmond.

I wasn't aware of any movie - Sugar Land is frequently referenced on 20s and 30s blues and folk records. Most famously in Midnight Special

If you ever go to Houston, boy you'd better walk right,
And you better not gamble, and you better not fight,
Benson Crocker will arrest you, Jimmy Boone will take you down,
And you can bet your bottom dollar that your Sugarland bound

I don't even know what the Minnesota state prison is called. All I know is it's in Stillwater.

You have heard of Steven Spielberg, though?  And Goldie Hawn?  I can see why you might not have heard of Kenneth Hall.
