The 1996 U.S. general election was held on November 5 of that year.

In the presidential election, incumbent Democratic president Bill Clinton defeated Republican challenger Bob Dole, the former Kansas Senator and Senate majority leader who had resigned after entering the campaign. Clinton won a plurality of the popular vote and took 379 electoral votes compared to Dole's 159.
