Yes, right now he seems to have stopped the bleeding and remains in the high 50s. A lot of things can happen in 3 months and half, however.

Le Monde had a good article looking back on first round polls since 1974 to show when the election was "decided". While 2007 was decided quickly in January and 2002 was never 'decided', the election has usually been decided in February/March. Balladur, Barre and Giscard were all leading in 95, 88 and 81 at this point (Barre led Chirac, not Mitt'rand).

Do like most French would be doing:

Give up on polls.

Give up on this election.

Nobody as a clue about this election so far, too much unusual people, too unusual context, that's the only thing people should retain.

Can't wait to see the abstention rate.

That being said, what Hashemite said is correct, regardless of what Le Monde can say about any past elections, the core of the campaign uses to be February-March, and April would be here to confirm an eventual surprise, so far nothing important happened, tomorrow might be a step, 1st big meeting of Hollande, but not even sure, the true campaign might also begin when Sarkozy will show as a candidate. Burying Sarkozy now would be...daring.

(I can't believe I'm writing something about this)

It's not as if this election had any big kind of importance anyhow...
