I think there's a good chance he opts out of a losing re-election battle and lets a stronger challenger take on Cuomo.

that would be bad if he had to do that...If hypothetical president romney isnt strong enough, no republican will be...

Not necessarily. Reagan would have probably sent Carter back to Georgia. Kennedy might have gotten to 200 electoral votes against Reagan.
