As a side note, Gingrich is sounding more and more interested in a presidential bid, though that may just be a ploy to sell books:

It's a shame someone so clearly intelligent has to be so intellectually dishonest.

If some how Gingrich ran and became the Republican nominee, then judging by that bit there I can use my old fall back of not voting for crazy people as the reason behind my vote. That response of his doesn't really make any sense given the question.

Democracy: Doesn't work if you vote for crazy people.

Gingrich, intelligent as he is, has resorted to Orwellian language in an effort to use the phrase "secular-socialist" as code for "Marxist" and to compare a President who has done little to degrade civil rights to the Devil Incarnate. Such suggests that he is simply a less-scatterbrained version of Sarah Palin.

The Steady Hand will beat the rigid ideologue, the sell-out to unsavory interests, or the scatterbrain in 2012... decisively.

It is typical of Newt to escalate his rhetoric to the point where it undermines whatever he is trying to say. That is one reason, perhaps the main reason, that he is a political dud. Nobody ever told Newt that less is more.

My feelings exactly.  I had great respect for Newt Gingrich before HCR debate began.

People compared Bush to Hitler and got away with it. I feel no sympathy for anyone who thinks Gingrich is extreme and if you look at the democrats today there really isn't much different between them and the communists from Russia in the mid 20th century. The nazis? I won't go that far but running Government Motors while it's still somewhat owned privately is a good start down that direction.

People compared Bush to Hitler and got away with it.

Dubya was a frontman for the much-more dangerous and insidious Karl Rove, who tried to exercise dictatorial power as Party Boss without being a dictator.

Now that is extreme and preposterous! You tell me where the Gulag-style camps are. You  name the equivalent of OGPU in America. You tell me how you could survive, let alone your cranky and derogatory stuff can be posted on the Web, if Barack Obama is the equivalent of Josef Stalin. You tell me where our President's picture is reaching parity with those of  George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  You can explain how we have an opposition party that believes that it can win.

The camps are called public schools. The government has no business owning or running anything in the private sector. Newt Gingrich is not an extremist.

What? Rove only dealt in policy formation insomuch as it got Bush elected and furthered Bush's political career. Bush also disregarded Rove's advice on a number of occasions. Cheney was far more in control of Bush than anyone else by a long shot up until the 2006 midterms, when Rove and Cheney were both cast away.

Gingrich likes selling himself. This isn't surprising.

Uh Oh... He's caught on to the entire plan! Quick! Somebody send him to the Gulags!

We'll erase his files, the person known as "Derek" never existed...

The guy who blamed the murders of Susan Smith's children on the Democrats? This seems tame, lame, and cliched compared to his golden dayss of obfuscation.

So, when someone speaks of "Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union," "presenting a threat to America," what that said person is really talking about is a threat to "the historic contract we've had which say your rights come from your creator?"

Do you actually believe all that???
Really, I consider myself to be a socialist and that anyone could mix up two ideologies as radically opposed as liberalism and socialism (or liberalism and fascism for that matter) is beyond me.
If someone who actually completed highschool would make such a comparison, it would be worrying enough. But when one of the most important spokesmen of the main opposition party in the most powerfull nation on earth starts to sell this kind of crap, it's just plain sickening and/or incredibly cynic.

I stopped at Mussolini for delusions of grandeur, intellectual dishonesty, and for starting a pointless war against a prostrate power.

I wish I could say this even slightly surprises me, but it doesn't. Not only regarding Newt, but almost every major GOP player today.

Its sad that discourse has degenerated to the point that this level of hyperbolic language which only a few years ago was directed towards Bush essentially by random nutty loudmouth protesters and certifiable whackjobs (e.g. Cynthia McKinney), is today applied to the President by even the most "respectable" members of the Republican establishment.

I'm sorry, but speaking as someone who actually often talked politics with many Democrats while Bush was in office, even when concerns peaked about W's misleading the country into war over Iraqi WMD's, rampant politicization of the DoJ and every other government agency, abuse of the Patriot Act and domestic surveillance, the ascendancy of 'unitary executive' theory, etc, etc, anyone in a meeting of Democrats said Bush and the Republicans were as great a threat to America as the Nazis or the Soviet Union ever was would've likely been humored at best, or more likely chucklingly told "oh c'mon, he's not that bad".

Now though that seems to be the common thread throughout the GOP, and the realists who understand how over the top such beliefs are seem to be the exception to the rule.

Btw, Gingrich was flogging his book in Iowa today:

http://www.iowapolitics.com/index.iml?Article=197889

He certainly looks interested in creating the appearance that he wants to run for president, in a more substantial way than he did four years ago.  Whether that appearance is actually accurate or not, I don't know.

He paid attention to Glenn Beck's ratings surge.  Controversy sells books.  Comparing the Democrats to Communists is good Capitalism (if also credibility-shattering gimmickry).
