While I applaud Senator Scott for the obvious effort he put into drafting this bill (especially the seal, which is simply excellent), I urge the Assembly to consider the several alternative flag designs and regional mottos proposed by citizens in this thread. I'm particularly partial to my own proposal:

but others preferred different designs (including a few that Scott and I suggested but later abandoned), and their voices should be heard as well. I think the best way to handle this is via a public referendum: give citizens a few days to nominate their preferred flags/mottos/etc., and then hold a 72 hour STV vote to decide between them. That way, our regional symbols represent both the diversity of our population and the democratic values of our Constitution.

Please don't give Harambe a statue. Also, most of these symbols are a waste of time.

As this Assembly's only member of the Harambe Freedom Party, I can't say I'm shocked that Our Savior would be shown such little respect. But I'll take the high road and just respectfully disagree.

I'm okay with compromising on the flag issue and taking it to a referendum.  Just please keep the Harambe provision in the bill.  Pretty please.

Also, I'll note that I conducted a poll on most of the other symbols in this bill a few months ago and both the motto, flower, bird, and anthem received majority support.  The flag was much more contentious.

If we're going to spend absurd amounts of money on overused memes, why not have Harambe hold a tablet with a list of Chuck Norris jokes? We can have speakers playing Gangnam Style 24/7 around the statue. Then we can pass a bill forcing 50% of political ads to have a rickroll in them.

As Regional Senator I'd very much support a referendum for a new flag

Also, what's the point of an official bird, flower, primate, etc.

Most IRL American states have an official bird, flower, and tree, so that's not too out of the ordinary. As for the official primate... yeah, that's pretty out there.

The former Northeast had regional symbols.  In fact, most of the people who voted in my poll a few months ago opted to retain most of the symbols the Northeast used, which is why they're in the bill.

Is having an official primate different?  Sure it is, but we're a special region.  And we can afford to have a little fun now and then.

Allow me to rephrase the question; what's the purpose of having an official flower, tree, etc.

To further prove the Libertarians right that all government does is waste money, obviously.

What's wrong with it? It adds a bit of color and realism to the game, and it allows us to shape the culture of our region.

The debate period has ended. Time to vote (this is the last bill we are voting on until after the election is over):

Given the seemingly universal support for a referendum on the regional flag (even the sponsor signed on to the idea), I'm fairly surprised that no one in the Assembly introduced an amendment to this bill.
