I'm not voting for Trump under any circumstances, but I'd have a hard time pulling the lever for Bernie. Might vote third party or hold my nose and vote for him if its against Trump. If it's any other Republican (even Pence) I'd probably vote for the Republican.

I agree with both of you. The metaphor I think of would be if General Patton were drawing up his invasion plans for Sicily when Clark Gable bursts in and says "Too many people have died under your watch! Young people love me! I'm the future of the army! I should get to draw up plans to invade Sicily!"

You might think - yes, he is a good face for the army and morale, yes a lot of people have died in fighting under George Patton, and yes we all want to invade Sicily and defeat the Axis powers, but I sure as hell am not going to let this guy be in charge here and now.

Similarly, yes, we all think Bernie is helpful at getting young people engaged, yes Democratic leadership has made a lot of mistakes in the past few years, some which have been very costly, and yes we all want to live in a country where everyone can afford college and healthcare. But there has sure as hell got to be a better person to go about achieving this than Bernie Sanders.

Although, as I said, if it came down to Bernie (D) vs. Trump (R), I'd vote for Bernie.

It's almost as if people's political beliefs change over time.

Sanders's current message is a modification of his beliefs to make them palatable to the general public. This isn't uncommon.  Most officeholders worthy of any respect have to do at least some of this. A lot of bernie's supporters are not going to vote for a genuine socialist. I wouldn't be surprised if he became less positive with the soviet union, etc after the USSR fell and what was going on there became common knowledge.
