well, I mean, take II.2. The rest of the items mentioned in the actual law make sense (tobacco, etc), but gum? That just seems dumb to me. That seems to be the case for a large majority if not all of these. We should, however, make sure the repeal of these doesn't seem to lead to terrible consequences.

These are non-safety related regulations. I have nothing against actual health and safety regulations. These tend to be justified under the "deceptive labels" argument as though a consumer is somehow wronged if they buy a fruitcake that isn't a standard size or peanuts that still contain a few skins or meat sauce that isnt sufficiently meaty. But the industrial processes required to ensure such minutiae run up costs for little if any consumer benefit. Also, such rigid standards are largely incumbent driven as bigger food producers are more easily able to absorb compliance costs and navigate these obscure regs, which locks out new firms. Previous dumb regs we repealed similar to this banned raisin cakes lacking a specific number of raisins or meat loaf in non rectangular shapes.

Idk but I don't want an undersized fruitcake, bad peanut or non-meaty meat sauce.

Idk but I don't want an undersized fruitcake, bad peanut or non-meaty meat sauce.

Its all subjective. Not everyone wants things the same size or with the same ratio of meat to sauce. In a free world where we have independent thinking persons with different tastes and different wants why shouldn't consumers decide for themselves what products speak to them, rather than limiting them to robot products? What may be "undersized", "bad", or "non-meaty" to you will not necessarily be the same to other people. I for one prefer peanuts with skins and find the implication that they are somehow "bad" for that silly. Plus with that particular example, only large companies have technology to skin peanuts without doing it by hand which prices out smaller producers.

All this bill does is eliminate the criminal liability for making or selling these non harmful products. That a free country drags you to court if you sell peanuts with skins on them is dumb. Ditto for extra crispy fried meats, or jumbo frozen cherry tarts. Let the people decide. I stand by my characterization that these regulations are dumb and urge the House to join me in standing up for freedom of choice. If Prago sauce isnt meaty enough for you, you have the right to buy Rague sauce.

Since there appear to be no other questions/comments/concerns, I'll go ahead and motion for a final vote.

With 24 hours having passed without objection, a final vote is now open. Representatives will now have 72 hours to vote or until all Representatives vote.
