Colorado is not a safe D state. Clinton won by 5 as she won nationally by 2 (D+3). Polish won by 11 as the national environment was D +8 (another case of D+3). It is a democratic leaning state particularly ill suited for the Trump era. The state is a lean democratic state, but I don’t expect Gardner to win because of the national environment.

Why do count like this?
This way of counting almost ensures that the majority of states will trend against the winner of the popular vote.

It just looks like a desperate way of making Dem states appear less blue.
Colorado is blue now, Clinton's performance is pretty much the Dem floor outside of Cali/NY.

Isn't this the very definition of identity politics? I think he would make an excellent senator who has a track record as governor, mayor and businessman. If more people like him are elected to congress, from both sides, a lot more stuff would get done. Even though legislatures and cabinets should somewhat look like the constituents they represent, I more care about competence, leadership, honor and the right kind of temperament and experience. I see the Hick as absolutely qualified for the seat and with an excellent chance to win in November 2020.

"Identity politics" is a right-wing talkingpoint to divide people up. And Mr. Drumpf is the main proponent if identity politics. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Hickenlooper and would strongly support him if nominated to defeat Gardner, but I believe the institutions, including senate, should at least to a degree look like America. And America is not 3/4 old white dudes. I know that you can't have exactly 50 women, 50 men, about 13 blacks and a third of latinos all at the same time in the chamber. But when we have a senate seat that much likely to flip Dem, why do we need another old white dude?

Well I'm glad I won't have to spend the next 18 months arguing with anyone over this race because everyone will just accept its Safe D and move on. Not the biggest fan of Hick but he'll almost certainly vote like a Generic D and toe the party line when necessary so whatever.
