AP News: Man convicted of attacking ex-Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer sentenced to 30 years

Quote
The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley handed down the sentence for David DePape, 44, whom jurors found guilty last November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term.

DePape was given 20 years for one count and 30 years for another count. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also given credit for the 18 months that he's been in custody.

Just send him back to Canada. That’s a worse fate at this point.

Sounds like a reasonable sentence. If the victim had died, 30 years for the perpetrator would have been a bit soft (and I’d say the same if the victim was just an ordinary citizen. No one deserves to be beaten with a hammer).

If it’s a federal prison , there is no chance for parole at well . He must serve at least 85% of his sentence behind bars which means this scumbag will be rotting for at least the next 25 years

Seems reasonable, but I would prefer it be in a secure mental facility where he can be suitably medicated. While political rhetoric likely spurred him on, this man is not stable.

His best shot may be Trump winning and considering a commute or so. But I doubt Trump would even care.

That was a really bad crime. It looked like the Canadian went there with one intention.

Deserved.

Since there's video of him attacking Pelosi with a hammer I don't think it would go over well, and probably even those who thought this was a hookup or something would think he shouldn't spend time behind bars for it.

Agree with the length of sentence, but feel it should've been spent in a mental health facility rather than prison.

I'm sure Abbott would pardon him too if he could. Thank God he doesn't have the ability to.

Canada isn't sending its best. It's sending actors and maple syrup products. It's sending political activists. And it's sending...those with strong opinions! Some, I assume, are bad people.

I think the important thing that we all need to remember here is that Paul Pelosi isn't a saint guys.

It's a fair sentence.  There needs to be deterrence for people who invade the homes of public officials and batter them, or their families.

Judge Reopens Sentencing Hearing for Man Who Attacked Pelosi’s Husband
The court said it made a mistake by not asking David DePape if he had anything to say at his sentencing hearing. The parties will be back in court on May 28.

Quote
A judge reopened on Saturday a sentencing hearing for the intruder who bludgeoned Nancy Pelosi’s husband two years ago, admitting that the court had not given the defendant a chance to make a statement.

David DePape was sentenced on Friday to 30 years in federal prison for breaking into the San Francisco home of Ms. Pelosi, who was speaker of the House at the time, and attacking her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer. But it was a mistake to not ask Mr. DePape beforehand if he had anything to say, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley acknowledged in a court order, setting a May 28 date to reopen the hearing to allow Mr. DePape to make a statement.

During Friday’s hearing, Judge Corley wrote, “no party brought to the court’s attention” that it had not allowed Mr. DePape to speak, a requirement of federal criminal procedures. “As the court did not do so, it committed clear error,” she wrote.

The error is unlikely to alter the sentence, but Mr. DePape will now have the opportunity to make a case for a more lenient one. The error was noticed by prosecutors on Friday afternoon, shortly after the sentence was read...

Just a procedural matter to ensure the sentence isn't reversed on appeal, as the right to allocution is fundamental and could easily get an easy layup in this case tossed back. Anyone want to bet whether the sentence will change one iota after this guy is given a chance to address the court?

Getting out of prison at 74 sounds like it easily could be a worse sentence than serving life.

The only people "set off" by this were deranged Trumpist idiots who spew dumb, sh*tty disinfo like faked gay relationships instead of ever saying anything meaningful. DePape & Paul had no relationship & the "something" that "set him off" was being a far-right conspiracy theorist, which he admitted to at his trial when he testified in his own defense with his words.

And Trudeau will pay for it. Not 99%, 100%.

Kidding aside, imagine throwing 25 years of your life away for another country's politics.

According to what I've read, he's been living in the US for over 20 years. So, he's basically an American - just another right-wing nut job.

Also, many Canadians pay more attention to American politics than their own lol.
