Special election to fill vacancy caused by the death of Key Pittman on November 10, 1940. Pittman had won re-election on November 5, 1940 for another term beginning on January 3, 1941. Berkeley Bunker was appointed to fill the vacancy for both the unexpired term ending January 3, 1941 and the new term beginning that same date. For the term beginning in 1941, a special election was scheduled for the next statewide general election on November 3, 1942. The winner of the special election would complete the unexpired term ending January 3, 1947.
James Scrugham would himself die in office on June 23, 1945, necessitating another appointment. Edward Carville, the sitting governor, resigned that office to be appointed to fill the vacancy and served the remainder of the term.
