Election Notes:
  • The votes from Santa Barbara County were not included in the canvass. The statewide totals listed here are the certified totals and do NOT include the Santa Barbara figures. Additionally, the handwritten canvass lists Lewis' votes in two columns, one for "E. J. Lewis" and the other for "E. J. C. Lewis". The legislature's canvass combined these figures for Lewis's "true" total.
  • Romualdo Pacheco became Governor on February 27, 1875 when Newton Booth resigned to become a United States Senator. Pacheco was succeeded by President pro tempore of the Senate William Irwin, who served the remainder of the term.
  • Candidates' party affiliations obtained from the 11/25/1871 Placer Herald (of Auburn). https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn82014998/1871-11-25/ed-1/seq-2/
