Eshleman was also nominated on the Republican ticket.
John Eshleman would die in office on February 28, 1916. The governor, Hiram Johnson, appointed William Stephens to fill the vacancy on July 22, 1916. Stephens became governor on March 15, 1917 when Johnson resigned to become a United States Senator. The office of Lieutenant Governor was then vacant for the remainder of the term.
