  • The election of 1863 was the first time that the Secretary of State of California was chosen by popular vote. Prior to 1863, Secretaries of State were appointed.
  • There were no votes from Lake County listed on the statewide abstract. In addition to the regular county vote, the Soldier vote was 4,181 for Redding and 104 for Bishop.
