The election of 1863 was the first time that the Secretary of State of California was chosen by popular vote. Prior to 1863, Secretaries of State were appointed.
There were no votes from Lake County listed on the statewide abstract. In addition to the regular county vote, the Soldier vote was 4,181 for Redding and 104 for Bishop.
