Summary
After Henry M. Jackson, in his sixth term as a United States Senator, passed away in 1983, Republican Governor of Washington John Spellman appointed former three-term Governor of Washington Dan Evans to the seat. Despite some controversy over the appointment of a Republican to a Democratic seat, Dan Evans defeated liberal Democratic Congressman Mike Lowry in this special election held in November of 1983.
