I've also been endorsed by Everett, or are you only putting people on in positions of importance?

Only people who have held any sort of official position (then again that's almost everybody Tongue )

Okay, I figured so, but I thought I'd ask.

Secretary of Defense Resigns
Boca Raton, FL-- Secretary of Defense and Security Ben Meyers announced his resignation from the office today citing that he was busier than anticipated with real life issues.  President Siege40 announced his intention to fill the office and that of the Attorney General (who also resigned this month); both offices have already held two people in the President's term so far.

The Secretary of Defense also dropped out of the Southeast Senate race, and endorsed Jake, a fellow member of the Christian Democratic Party.

October 12, 2005

Presidential, Southeast, Midwest Races Heat Up
Plant City, FL-- Following the resignation of the Secretary of Defense the main news yesterday was StatesRights' abrupt withdrawal from the Southeast Senatorial and Presidential races.  StatesRights, who did not have an official running mate, was trailing in the polls for both of these races.  He also refrained from endorsing any other candidates.  This narrows the presidential race down to seven tickets, one of which does not have a vice presidential candidate; meanwhile the Southeast Senatorial race has gone from a three-man race to an unopposed election for Jake.

Butte, MT-- Midwest Governor CheeseWhiz announced that he would be running for the Midwest Senate seat currently occupied by two-term Senator DanielX.  If he wins, the Midwest Gubernatorial seat will be claimed by Lieutenant Governor Jas of Iowa.  The two candidates have already begun holding their debate; Governor CheeseWhiz has gained several endorsements since his announcement while DanielX retains the backing of the Right to Life League and the Atlasian Conservative Alliance.

Santa Fe, NM-- Two-time Presidential candidate Jesus of Washington was widely expected not to have a running mate once again in the upcoming election.  He ran without a vice presidential candidate in June and as a result suffered from a lack of respect from media organizations and more importantly, the voters.  But former Pacific Lieutenant Governor Lewis Trondheim announced he would be Jesus' running mate today, putting him at odds with the Social Democratic Party, of which Trondheim is a member of, which has already endorsed the LiberalPA/skybridge.  It is not known if Jesus and Lewis Trondheim will run a serious campaign, but the center-left libertarianism of Jesus may appeal to some voters.

Miami, FL-- Vice President Emsworth announced in a campaign speech regarding forum affairs today that he encouraged the principle of federalism, arguing that allowing voters to take part in regional lawmaking was essential to keeping the nation as a whole active.  He stated, "Our strength does not lie in institutions, in offices, or in buildings in Nyman.  It lies in the hearts and minds of the Atlasian People.  We, the People, constitute the very basis, the very foundation, the very soul of this simulation.  It is we who should be collectively engaged, collectively interested. ... Therefore, I vow that I shall encourage the great principle on which our form of government is based, the principle of federalism.  I will not seek to expand the federal government's sphere of influence, but rather to maintain it, and allow the regions greater freedom of action.  It is for this reason that I would allow regions to come to their own conclusions with regard to abortion, education, or the minimum wage."  This puts him at odds with other presidential candidates who seek to amend the constitution in order to pass a federal minimum wage.

Detroit, MI-- Mideast Governor 9iron announced that he had selected former Senator and former Attorney General MHS2002 of Virginia to be the new Mideast Judge.  His nomination, expected to be confirmed, will be voted on by the Mideast residents on the weekend of October 21.  The network commends Governor 9iron for an excellent choice and urges the Mideast to confirm his nomination.

Memphis, TN-- TCash101, a member of the Independent Liberal Party from Tennessee, announced he was entering the Southeast Gubernatorial race yesterday, opposing incumbent Governor Bono for the seat.  He stated, "I have no huge agenda other than this:  to promote government that serves people, not ideology or party or special interests.  I will fight for your freedoms, wise use of your tax dollars, and responsible ethical government."  In a reference to his condemnation of the Southeast nullification crisis, he stated "I have spoken out against the elite of the forum, as well as my fellow Southeasterners when I felt they abused their powers."

Nyman, DC-- President Siege40 signed the Central American Free Trade Bill yesterday, which will open up ports and remove tarrifs sanctioned by Atlasia on countries in Central America and the Dominican-Republic.  The bill passed with five yeas, one nay, and three abstentions in the Senate this week.

The Network would like to ask the Department of Forum Affairs whether King's declaration of presidential candidacy is legal due to the running mate choice.

The Network would like to ask the Department of Forum Affairs whether King's declaration of presidential candidacy is legal due to the running mate choice.

I doubt that a declaration of candidacy can be 'invalidated'... however, since Atlasia elects Presidents and Vice Presidents as tickets, and NOTA is not a registered voter, I doubt I will be able to count any votes for him as valid (effectively invalidating his candidacy).

Tonight I'll see if I can pore over electoral law and find something.

Perhaps he can be listed on the ballot as "King/No Vice President," or "King/Write-in VP"?

I don't think that any declared candidate for president, without a valid vice-presidential candidate, should be allowed on the official ballot.
Article II, Section 1 (1) strongly implies that a ticket is elected, not an individual.

Article II, Section 1 (1)
"The executive power shall be vested in the President of the Republic of Atlasia. He shall be elected with a Vice President for a term of approximately four months."

How would a case be treated whereby someone declared themselves a candidate for the Vice-Presidency without a running-mate for president?

As to NOTA as a VP candidate, clearly allowing this would conflict with Article II, Section 1 (2):
"No person shall be President who has not attained 250 or more posts, and is not a registered voter. No person ineligible to be elected to or to occupy the position of President shall be eligible to be elected to or to occupy the position of Vice President."

Actually, allow me revise that.

Void may be too strong.
I don't believe his name should be officially placed on the ballot, however he should be allowed to gain votes via write-in, which must state a VP choice also.

Compliance must then be made with the Unified Electoral Code Act, Section 1 (5): "In order for write-in votes for a candidate to qualify as countable votes, the person written-in must formally accept the write-in candidacy before the end of voting in the given election."

I would also say that I feel such an acceptance must also be made by the VP choice for the vote to be valid.
