Yea pretty much. People like Kemp who abuse their power to launch dubious criminal investigations for partisan gain are the kind of people worth Lock Them Up chants. It would be my hope that Abrams would launch an investigation of his office if she won, but somehow I doubt that would happen.

The Supreme Court made all this election mucking much easier when they overturned key provisions in the Voting Rights Act. Remember in the eternal wisdom of John Roberts the best way to get over race is to like to get over race, duh.

As far as I am concerned, Shelby was just Roberts finding a reason to justify something he believed for a long time, like literally going back to his role in the Reagan administration, if not earlier. He was as vehemently against the VRA in the 80s as he was in 2013. I guess racism must have been dead in the 80s too?  Tears of joy

For as 'concerned' as Roberts acts regarding the USSC's legitimacy, he can't seem to stop himself from ruling on cases that give more and more unfair advantages to the wealthy and more importantly, the Republican Party. And yet he has the gall to sit on his perch and try to tell us that the Intelligent Man™ on the street simply won't understand that courts striking down brazen political corruption in the form of rigged district maps is just the court system holding corrupt politicians to account. Awfully convenient for the GOP Surprise

If you look at it objectively over the last decade The Supreme Court has been the worst branch of government. I don't think most Americans believe this, polling doesn't express this but it's true. That's saying a lot with Congress basically becoming a dysfunctional partisan mess that gets nothing done. The Supreme Court however has got a lot done, mostly the detriment of regular people and to the benefit of corporations and those already in power. Sadly, it will only continue.

You just know there’s gonna be a ton of stories like this and Republicans will cry voter fraud on social media.

If only their "voters shouldn't break the law" concept mattered when it came to following protocol at polling locations

In our 2 "swing precincts" in Whitfield County:

Total Votes Cast in 2014 (EV + ED): 768
Total Votes Cast in 2018 (as of 2 PM - incl. EV): 1330
Total Votes Cast in 2016 (EV + ED): 2155

This is either really good or really bad for us.

I'm getting constant ads for McBath/Abrams on YouTube. I can't think of any reason Google would think that I live in Georgia, besides visiting this thread often? Thanks, guys.

Probably really good? I don't think enthusiasm is going to advantage the GOP when an unpopular Republican is in office.

FWIW, I've now got 4 updated precincts' worth of data - 2 from swing precincts and 2 from heavily GOP precincts:

SWING PRECINCTS (62% of 2016 Turnout)
Total Votes Cast in 2014 (EV + ED): 768
Total Votes Cast in 2018 (as of 2 PM - incl. EV): 1330
Total Votes Cast in 2016 (EV + ED): 2155

STRONG GOP PRECINCTS (64% of 2016 Turnout)
Total Votes Cast in 2014 (EV + ED): 1948
Total Votes Cast in 2018 (as of 2 PM - incl. EV): 2305
Total Votes Cast in 2016 (EV + ED): 3620

So...eh, not great.

And finally, an update from Strong Dem territory in Whitfield County:

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

So basically, what I'm seeing here thus far is that: the more Democratic the area, the higher the turnout compared to 2014. However, pretty much every area seems to be roughly even as a share of 2016 turnout (with a slight edge to the stronger GOP turf). Not sure how much this impacts things, if much at all...but we're looking like we're going to hit >80% of 2016 turnout easily.

This is only 6 precincts combined in 1 county, though, so make of it what you will.

Another way to look at it:

Strong GOP: 118% of 2014
Swing Areas: 173% of 2014
Strong DEM: 189% of 2014

Total Precincts (6): 138% of 2014

I don't know why they are surprised. Early voting was nuts and polls indicated possibly the highest turnout midterm in generations. They should have played it safe gotten more machines, if not more polling places even.

I really don't get it: every county has x number of machines for a higher turnout presidential. Why can't they just drop-off the same number of machines in midterm cycles, too? A little bit extra hauling and booting ain't that difficult.

Seems like something poll workers should know

You really wouldn't believe how uninformed the average poll worker in Georgia tends to be. Many are about 100 years old and have been in the position for decades, long before most of the modern voting rules were even in effect. They just conduct business how they always did until forced to adapt.

Locally, we keep having to instruct poll workers to offer provisional ballots when somebody is not eligible according to their records, and we intercepted a case this morning of a poll worker trying to turn someone away who had requested a mail ballot but not turned it in (poll workers can void the mail ballot then and there, and allow them to vote on-site electronically).

It's really a big god-damn mess. If there's any case to be made for reducing the # of precincts statewide, it's to reduce the # of low-info poll workers handling the reins of democracy.
