"Matthew 5:7   Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy."

Well, I don't think Falwell was a very merciful person.

Well, I don't remember Corzine saying hateful things right after September 11.

Raising taxes is pretty hateful

You're right, it is hateful, especially when those taxes are used to buy nuclear weapons and to fund immoral wars like the one in Iraq.

Loved by some, hated by others. I would suggest he deserves the same respect that he showed to those whose deaths he used to score political points and whose lives he belittled. I will not miss this man.

Saw this elsewhere. Can anyone vouch the truth of the South African bit?

In a way he's an Apostle and a Pharisee at the same time, like Al Sharpton. He is certainly not a saint, and God does not get fooled by TV coverage and politics. Leave it at that.

Although I dislike most things that Jerry Ferwell stood for, he himself thought that he was doing the right thing.  For that we must give him credit.  It was never what he stood for that I detested as much as the fact that the power he yeilded allowed him to actually follow through with so much of his doctrine.

Fleecing the poor in order to line his pockets?

Honestly - only he knew what his motivations were, but they seemed more than dubious at times.

RIP (remember this thread next time I say I am glad Jon Corzine is injured)

What a great American and truly a horrible loss

Jon Corzine isn't a hateful demagogue. He's never said such bigotted crap. Don't compare him to this sleaze bag.
Well, I don't remember Corzine saying hateful things right after September 11.

You're still upset about those pennies!? I guess you'll appreciate the thousands of dollars you will get from his tax cuts this year.

You are hopelessly upper middle class suburban.
The area he lives in isn't upper middle class, not that it matters, but the point is he likes to pretend to be some "Oh no, their goes the dems taxing us rich/upper middle class people"

If someone is so wrong, do we give them respect and credit? No. Just because someone believes they are doing the right thing, it doesnt mean they should be given credit. Terrorists think they are doing the right thing, but they are still wrong.

Anyway... on to Jerry Falwell. It's sad for those who loved him and too bad that he died at 73 because a man of his wealth and stature could at least make it to their 80s. However, as John McCain says, this "Agent of Intolerance" will not be greatly missed. I hope he will find mercy in heaven.

Jerry Falwell's death leaves me with odd feelings.  He was one of the bętes noires of my youth, and I hated almost everything for which he stood.  However, when I read those comments he made, I feel sad.  His views shut out other people preemptorily, and closed him to much of what he could have experienced.  It must be very difficult to live that way, as I suspect that he didn't hate people, but felt that moral imperatives prevented him from showing certain people kindness.  I feel sorry for both him and for the great loss his family must be suffering

Well don't look at me States. I'm offering the guy a prayer despite mouthing off rhetoric and heading an organisations that has probably indirectly helped cause the suicide of countless Gay Americans

I apologize if I offended you, States, but I think I appraised Falwell's legacy in the gentlest possible terms.  I recognize that many people mourn his loss, but it can't be forgotten what he did while he was alive.

So, a person I never listened to, whom was declared as my religious leader by everyone that opposes the concept of sex belonging in the context of a marriage between a man and a woman, has died suddenly.

My prayers go out to his family.

I know! It's been such a long time, but for some reason, I felt that I wanted to come back to the forum to see if my memories of it have held up. It's good to hear from you again, jmfcst.  We've had so many good debates together.

I thought liberals were supposed to be the compassionate ones.

Although I didn't agree with him on very much: after someone is dead, it is only proper and fitting that if you don't have anything nice to say, shut up.  And it is probably better to say something nice rather than nothing at all.

Otherwise, it only makes one appear crass and ill-bred.

About the only fair exception I would venture to make to this rule are cold-blooded killers.

P.S. DWTL - you're an idiot.
