Introduction
Washington is a state located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Admitted into the Union in 1889, Washington was the 42nd state to join. It is bordered by Oregon to the south, Idaho to the west, and British Columbia to the north. Its capital is Olympia and its largest city is Seattle. Washington currently leans towards the Democratic Party, last voting Republican for President in 1984 and for Governor in 1980. The Democrats currently hold wide majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. Federally, Democrats have both Senate seats and six of nine House seats.
