He was hacked, from what I've researched.

Weiner's story stretches credulity.  Both his Twitter and yfrog accounts were hacked, simultaneously, while he was logged in to them?  It's entirely possible the woman in question wasn't the intended recipient - he clearly was too careless to make it private so he may well have been too careless to send it to the correct recipient.  If it were a hacker it would have been sent to a man, possibly a fake account set up for that very purpose.  Furthermore, as others have pointed out, if he were hacked why isn't there a police investigation?

But why would he even send the pic though? He didn't think he would be caught? He also claimed his account was hacked within minutes of the pic being sent, no? That seems odd as well. Andrew Breitbart's involvement here is fishy...

Anyways, this is a highly amusing story and I have a feeling this is going places. I can't wait to watch the Daily show take this on. Smiley

Couldn't have happened to a bigger douchebag. My cousins have him as a Congressman....I don't like him.

Same thing happens to an Ontario politician... but this time with an even less credible cover story.

Another person who can't use twitter properly and blames in on hackers.  It is the modern equivalent of leaving porn in the VCR.

Yeah, its possible the picture is him, and he meant to send it to someone else.
Or it is some GOP prankster who has tried other stunts on other Democrat congressmen, which is plausible considering this person may have once tried to tap the phones of a democrat recently.  I'm sure there are other hackers capable of doing this kind of stuff, but "Twitter" would know the IP address of all the tweets, and the police should subpoena them if Weiner files charges.

I'm curious as to why Weiner is following (and presumably direct messaging) random high school and college girls in the first place. For now there is all a bunch of circumstantial evidence, but simplest explanation to me looks like he just got caught being a sloppy horndog.  I happen to think Weiner is a nasty little cuss, but if he was hacked he should pursue it strongly. However, from his most recent comments it looks like Weiner just wants this to go away.  Even changing his wording to prank instead of a criminal breach of privacy. In the end, it really isn't much of a story, but I do enjoy watching egoists like Weiner squirm.

To be fair, it's really part of good marketing to follow people who follow you back.

Otherwise, I defer to Patrick1 and Lunar on this matter.

Yeah, I think the number was 91.

If there was some big conspiracy against Weiner then it would have been really bad timing. The Friday of a long holiday weekend is not built for maximum exposure (cough).  I only found out about this story tonight.

I might be missing something, but why is there (apparently) one one person who noticed the alleged tweet? I'd imagine Weiner has a ton of followers.

It wasn't only one person and it was only up for 4 minutes prior to being deleted.

And since Weiner doesn't deny that the tweet was posted, there's no need to pursue a theory that involves a tweet not being sent.

He was hacked, from what I've researched.

If Weiner's Twitter and yfrog accounts were hacked, I'm the Queen of England.  If he was hacked, why did he call a lawyer instead of the Capitol Police or FBI?  Hacking the Twitter account of a public official is a federal offense.  Just ask the guy who was convicted of hacking into Sarah Palin's e-mail account.

Which member of New York's congressional delegation will post a lewd picture of themselves on the internet next, do you guys reckon? It's too bad old Vito Fossella got run out of office before twitter really took off.

They've all been men so far.  It's time for a picture from Kirsten Gillibrand for equal opportunity - though our luck, equal opportunity would be a picture of Louise Slaughter or Nita Lowey, instead.

An Alternative theory was that he was messaging someone with the name "H" and accidentally sent it to someone with the name "G"

His wife might have a twitter account - Huma Abedin - but I can't find it.

He may have been trying to send his wife the photo?

I'm pretty sure Weiner knows how to use Twitter better than to make a mistake like this.

He might have never tried to direct message a picture taken via his BlackBerry before

Which would also mean it'd be the obvious way for the hacker/prankster/whatever to make it seem like it actually was Weiner, no?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was something going on between him and this girl (what with her being one of the very few people he follows, and his disinclination to ask for an investigation, and them both deleting things afterwards)  but the actual tweet itself doesn't seem real to me. If he'd been talking with her to the extent that he felt comfortable sending that sort of picture, presumably he'd use a text message or email or however they'd been communicating previously. Plus, he'd have to have known he was uploading the picture to a publicly accessible photo service, no?

I mean, maybe he was drunk or something? Assuming the picture is legit, that's the only way I could really see him making such a strange series of decisions here.

He's now saying that the picture might be of his crotch, but that he definitely didn't send it.

It may or may not be his crotch?  We're dealing with Schrödinger's cock.

So Anthony Weiner may or may not be Erwin Schrödinger? The plot thickens...
