Whenever you see a poster being unusually accepting of both sides/saying that all people are right/advocating for useless middle ground put it here. In conclusion, place the comments of suspected "moderate heroes" here.

I have just been reading through my old posts and noting foolish I was (and still am, to a lesser extent I hope). Plus with the shutdown averted I think it is fitting that we have a thread about compromise and such.

Shouldn't this thread be a Silvermine?  After all, gold is such an extreme metal.

Silver is a rather extreme metal too.  As are metals in general.  I suggest talc.

That sounds too much like that scary old man from Alaska. I didn't like him, he looked at rocks too much.

Anybody supporting civil unions for gays but not full marriage rights. I'm too lazy to find such on the forum, but I'm sure somebody has taken this position at some point.

Ah. That brings back memories. I think I shall give a brief history lesson on the "term Moderate Hero" the newbies.

Circa 2008, after leaving his "communist phase", forum poster Boss Tweed (aka miamiu aka something with a copyright symbol in the name) became a sort of post-modernist/nihilist. He made this post in an argument about the 2000 election (though there's also a thread out there where someone contrasts this post ben made with one a few months earlier where he says he thought Gore won, I wish I could find that one).

yeah, that is pretty gross.  thankfully Ben doesn't actually believe it and instead is just trying to appear "moderate" and "pragmatic."  there was a time when I wasn't much different.  maybe in a few years he'll evolve into a cynical nihilist.

I don't believe Gore lost the election?  In a democracy, sometimes you lose a close race; you don't then spend the next 8 years whining about how the election was stolen; you try and win the next time.

And I'm already fairly cynical.

lol, not convincing me

Why do you believe I'm altering my opinions to fit an image over the internet?

I don't really want to psychoanalyze you, as appealing at that sounds.  but you just show far too many of the signs.  you want to be respected.  you want to be a USElectionAtlas Moderate Hero just like Gabu, Joe Republic, and some other blowhards.

The more you know!

edit; there's also this beautiful tweed post later in the thread:

I don't really want to psychoanalyze you, as appealing at that sounds.  but you just show far too many of the signs.  you want to be respected.  you want to be a USElectionAtlas Moderate Hero just like Gabu, Joe Republic, and some other blowhards.

This is the earliest recorded reference to Ben as a Moderate Hero.

Just for historical record.

not to brag, but I also invented fantasy politics and was the first to refer to BRTD as 'BRTD'.  among other things, of course.

That used to be the position of the original Moderate Hero who posted right after you (not sure if he still holds it.) He didn't even have a real justification for it, when pressed he basically said that he didn't want churches to be forced to recognize gay marriages. When pointed out that this has never happened he basically backed down to "Well gay marriage makes a lot of people unhappy so we should just stick with civil unions for now."

Though it's worth noting Moderate Heroism has a long history on Atlas long before tweed coined the term and it was kind of made because that type of mindset needed labeling. Any long-timer can remember the United Atlas Centrists from Fantasy Elections, who kind of embodied the concept. It was a party full of people who believed things like that Evan Bayh was awesome for being such a principled centrist (Seriously. This would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.) Of course it eventually became nothing but a party full of people who didn't want to join the Republicans or Democrats and eventually became an ideology-less machine with no purpose beyond winning elections like the old Mexican PRI. This is what led to its eventual collapse though it has had a few arguable spiritual successor parties.

That was my justification?  Yikes.
