So this is basically a McKinley realignment-type timeline.

Basically yes though there are some differences

Sad Sad 12 years of GOP rule after just one Obama term.

Though I think you probably would be much happier with this GOP than the OTL Tea Party/Trumpist GOP.

That's true, but more so as "loyal opposition" Smiley

I didn’t realize that Hawaii and Ohio had Senate Class 2  elections, don’t those state’s elect Senators in the 2016 & 2018 cycles? I just saw both Hawaii and Ohio were colored coded for the 2020 cycle! Just wondering. Also is Portman going to be a true Romneyite, or just pay lip service to the Romney agenda?

Thanks for pointing out the error I will fix it (their were special elections in both those states in 2014 and I forgot to edit that out)

President Romney reacts to the results of the election

Romney: Good Morning everyone, I am sure you all are fresh and energized today morning after last night(laughter). Yesterday 134 million Americans went out and voted in the election and I congratulate them for doing so because voting is one of the most important rights we have and exercising it is the only way we can keep our elected leaders accountable. After the results of yesterday became clear , I had the great opportunity to speak to President-Elect Portman and congratulate him on winning the election and I look forward to working with him over the next several weeks to make sure he has a successful Presidency. I was very impressed on the way he was able to talk about many important issues we face in our nation during the campaign but I was not surprised as he has been an excellent Vice President, so I wasnt surprised to see him be an excellent candidate as well and I am certain he will be an excellent President as well. I am sure that he will be able to build upon the work we started so American can constantly become better than it ever was before.

I also invited the newly elected members of the house, senate and gubernatorial races to the White House as well so we can talk about the many issues facing our nation and different states and ways to make sure they are successful.

Thank You , May God Bless You and May God Bless America

Sad that Whitmer lost. She would have been a fine president.

Do you plan to continue this into the Portman presidency? Would appreciate this!

I dont plan to continue it into the Portman Presidency but I do plan to right up a summary of it in the epilogue section of this TL.

My plan right now is to write an epilogue which covers not only the Portman presidency but the whole political era including the Democratic Wilson/IKE/Clinton of this Era all the way till the end of the political era. I feel that would be better and would connect more to the main part of this TL than writing up a day to day of the Portman Presidency.

Does the Romney administration conclude as Portman is inaugurated as President or will there be a lag of a few weeks or the first 100 days?

President-Elect Meets with President Romney for Transition Meeting:

Romney: I just had a great conversation with the President-Elect about a variety of issues ranging from how to build up a Team of Advisors and Staff who are critical to your success as a President, along with discussing a plan of how his incoming cabinet can meet with the current cabinet so they are ready to get going form day 1 .

Portman: I want to thank the President for arranging this meeting on such a short notice as it allows my incoming admin to get going from day 1.

Romney: Now its time for the official transition lunch so we will have to get going

He was considered but due to the fact his replacement would be chosen by a Democrat , so Portman went with Corker

Romney makes his final judicial appointment by appointing Attorney General Brian Sandoval to the  vacant seat on the 9th Circuit of Court Appeals

Anderson Cooper: Speculation has already begun that this appointment was made so they can appoint Mr.Sandoval to either Ginsburg's or Breyer's Seat on the Supreme Court and avoid a major confirmation fight due to it.

Looks like Portman is throwing away a Senate seat in New Hampshire.

These senate seats will flip before NH flips(due to how Republican NH has become in this TL)

- Pennsylvania
- Nevada
- Wisconsin
- Missouri(due to the fact Kander probably will run)
- Iowa
- North Carolina(due to how incompetent the state GOP is)
- and maybe even Colorado

So the Senate will have definitely flipped before NH flips so this is not a seat that will decide the control of the Senate

Leadership races to replace Boehner and McConnell as Congressional Leaders Begin:

House Speaker Race:

- House Majority Leader Eric Cantor
- House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan
- House Republican Conference Chairwomen  Cathy McMorris Rodgers

Senate Majority Leade Race:

- Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn
- Senate Conference Chair John Thune

Polls from Republican Voters:

Speaker of House:

Paul Ryan: 64%
Eric Cantor: 25%
Cathy McMorris Rodgers: 11%

Senate Majority Leader:

John Cornyn 51%
John Thune 49%

CNN Congressional Correspondent: Now of course these polls dont mean anything since it will be Republican House Members who will select the new speaker and same in Senate , and also Paul Ryan has by far the most name recognition out of all 3 candidates in the Speaker's race so I am not surprised by the lead he has in the polls .

Paul Ryan narrowly defeats Eric Cantor in an informal Leadership election to become Speaker-Elect. Cornyn beats Thune by two votes to become new GOP leader in the Senate.

Andrson Cooper: With both Speaker Boehner and Senate Majority Leader McConnell leaving office this upcoming January , the Republicans will have to select new leaders in both chambers to see who would become speaker- elect and new Majority Leader. For this to happen Boehner and McConnell called over everyone who will be serving as Republicans as the next including newly elected members to Washington to hold an informal vote on who the leaders will be and here are the results

In the House :

1st Ballot:

Eric Cantor: 106
Paul Ryan: 104
Cathy McMorris Rodgers: 33

2nd Ballot:

Paul Ryan: 124
Eric Cantor: 119

Heres a very important factor in Mr.Ryan victory, out of 23 Newly Elected Congressman, 12 who flipped previously held Democratic seats and 11 replacing retired Republican Congressman 22 out of that 23 when to Paul Ryan. So as a result of this , both Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Eric Cantor have dropped out of the Speaker race which makes Paul Ryan the Speaker-Elect. Now lets look at Senate

Senate:

John Cornyn 28
John Thune 26

Anderson Cooper: It was very close but Senator Cornyn managed to pull it off and as a result of this Senator Thune has dropped out of the leadership race, although we assume he will be the Majority Whip in the next Congress.

World Leaders tentatively sign on to a Climate Change agreement in London

Details of Agreeement:

- Requires Nations to increase funding for Alternative Energy Research and Projects
- Requires Nations to increase their Alternative Energy Tax Breaks by 10% over the next 5 years
- Requires Nations to implement cap and trade policies

Media: The Cap and Trade was a concession which President Romney and Prime Minister Andrew Scheer made but in return were able to get rid of an earlier proposal which would have required nations in the agreement to implement a carbon tax .
