Are we going to have a Pope or did we all become Lutherans?

*shot of black smoke rising from the stack*

And it appears that the Cardinals have once again not elected a Pope.  Whatever is going on inside the Vatican, it is clear that the electors are thinking long and hard about their choice.

*Cardinal Shah rises*

Brothers, there was some talk yesterday about holding another Council to work out the issues currently facing the Church.  Some of you were opposed to this idea, some of you were in favor of it.  I would like to ask those of you in favor a very blunt question... what changes, exactly, would you endorse if recommended by a council.  Those of you who said you were not in favor, could you elaborate as to why this is?

*Shah slowly sits back down*

Cardinal Antonelli rises.

My Brothers,

I do not see the purpose for another Council. We have many issues ahead of us but a Council would be far too time consuming and not necessarily appropriate for the issues we are facing. During Vatican II, we under went a serious change in how we participate in the Liturgy. This was the root reform which justifies the calling of a Council. I do not anticipate any major reforms that would require us to return here for an unlimited amount of time.

Cardinal Antonelli nods to his fellow Cardinals and takes his seat.

*Lumbayo rises*

Cardinal Shah, while I understand you asking such a question and am able to sense some concern in it, I must stress that the whole purpose of such a convent would be to decide what changes should be made. I would consider it very unwise, not just for someone with the intention of becoming Pope, but indeed for any of us to decide on their own accord, before the coucil itself and without consulting their fellow brothers of the Church what should and what should not be done. However, there are general outlines of what must be done that can already be appreciated. Among those changes necessary would be, in my opinion, to add a more practical education to the theological knowledge. A good shepherd must know his sheep well and understand their problems thoroughly. Reforms in such a direction would be one of my prioritiesin a convent, because there is need for it, if the Church is not to continue to lose touch with the Catholics of the world. Furthermore, continued theological disocurse could well need to changes now difficult to foresee.

At this rate, in real life we'll be up to Benedict XX (or maybe even Peter II).

Von Frick, looking tired, rises

Brethern, knowing full well that this remark will cost me any slim hope of the Chair of Peter, one thing this council should discuss is marriage on some men in holy orders.  We have for more than two decades permitted married, non celibate, men, to become priests of the church, in the Anglican Rite, as authorized by the late Pope, John Paul the Second.  We have seen this in the most ancient and apostolic eastern church.

While I may not like to see a "Frau Pope" or "Frau Bishop," there is general laughter, "I want to see the sacrament of ordination extended to those men engaged in the sacrament of marriage.  It will be good for the persons, but more importantly, it will be good the church.

Von Frick, looking less tired, smiles strongly and sits down.

((thx))

*he rises assertively*

Brothers, I certainly appreciate the vigorous spirit with which this conclave has been addressed.  But, I must, simply must disagree with the assertion that another council should be called.

Consider the history.  Yes, the first councils were necessary in creation of those tenents we consider to be the core of our Christian faith.  Of course they were useful.  But after that, what did they accomplish?  Yes, perhaps some hat regulations were established, some schisms supposedly healed, a counter-reformation attempted.  The Fourth Council of the Lateran even adopted a Canon that stated that Jews and Muslims should wear special garb so they would be more easily made targets of discrimination.  But what, in truth, did these solve?  Hardly anything!  And, though the modern councils have been more active (setting down, quite importantly and notably for the purpose of this conclave, the doctrine of papal infallibility), they too have their shortcomings.  The fact is, the word of the Holy Father has been the primary guiding word for Popes and believers since.  His encyclicals, his apostolic letters, his writings, have established the proper contemporary view of how a believer should behave.  Why, if we need proof of this, look no further than the 307 years between the Council of Trent and First Vatican Council; certainly some of our brothers would not suggest that Catholics wandered witless and confounded through those centuries without a clue of what to do? *he smiles, to remove any insult he may have provoked*

Let us take this from another perspective.  I have heard comments from some of our dear brothers that we must reach out to our fellow Christians in the spirit of brothership and reconciliation.  I agree; our well-intentioned non-Catholic friends should indeed be engaged in a mutually beneficial dialogue.  So, after beginning these talks, how would it seem to them if we suddenly decided we were going to start a new council, to promulgate even more doctrine that may clash with theirs?  Much of the friction we experience with them is due to the influence of rival councils over the years; the difference between some churches is a quibble over one minor council should be accepted!

So, no, I do not believe a new council is the best for our beloved church.  Thank you for tolerating my historical ramblings.

Brothers,

I recommend that our next council take the widest possible examination of the Church today and that no issues be left off the table. We face a new era where there are many problems but also great opportunities. There should be no hurry on any such council, we are a large body and everyone must be given the opportunity to have their opinions aired. This process may take some years, but I believe it will be worthwhile.  We have nothing to fear and I believe collectively we can set the way forward for our Church so that it may remain strong and vibrant in the future. I would endorse any decisions collectively reached by such a council, as I hope my fellow brothers would also.

Cardinal Miller stands up

Brothers, I'm going to try to be very blunt with all of you. The Church is currently in a state of, let us say, fuzziness. Many Catholics are confused on what the Church's stance is on many issues. This troubles me. We need another Council, in short, to define and concrete the Church's stance on these numerous issues, whatever they may be. We, as shepherds, have failed in that respect.

*Shot of black smoke rising*

Announcer:  And it appears that the Cardinals have once again not elected a Pope.  We are joined again by papal expert Richard McBrien.  Sir, what are we to make of all of this.

McBrien:  Thanks for having me again.  Well, this is turning out to be one fo the longer Conclaves in recent memory, I am personally not completely surprised by that.  The closest modern equivilent is the Conclave that elected Pope John Paul II in 1978.  It lasted as many days.  I think we will be able to expect a result as equally unpridictable.

Announcer:  So you doubt that any of the really big names we heard before the Conclave will be chosen.

McBrien:  Well, it is possible that the Cardinals are deadlocked between a couple of them, such as von Frick and Cheng or Hume and Yates, but if that is the case, I find it more liekly that the Caridinals will settle on a compromise candidate.

Announcer:  Thank you, sir.  We hope you come on again soon.

McBrien:  Thanks for having me.

Shouldn't there be 9 votes for Miller, if he's getting Sing's vote?

You also have Medina listed as a vote for me in the "regional" column but as a vote for Ribeiro in the parentheses in the beginning...*cough*go with me, go with me*cough*

Brothers,

If I may steer the discourse to a new direction. I wish to speak, if I may, on the need that I feel is present for our Church to speak out more loudly on issues of social and economic justice - matters which seem to be increasingly overlooked in the name of globalisation.

This world we live in is far from perfect and we cannot hope to solve all the problems that arise. But we can let the world know whose side we are on and we can try and force others to recognise where there are problems and what must be done to try and solve them.

It seems to me today that there is an exploitation going on, an exploitation of the less fortunate to the benefit of the well off. Our voice has not been strong enough in our condemnation of forces which have gravely negative effects on many of our flock. When Rome speaks, the world still listens. Let us make use of this audience to try and put pressure on those who support these practices. Let us highlight injustice where we see it and be not afraid to stand up against it.

For the good of the world's poor, for the good of our community, for the good of ourselves - let us be able to stand and speak with one voice to try and convince the world of what is right and what is just.
