I wonder how I carried Michigan while losing so badly nationally.  Maybe Dean and Bloomberg split the Dem vote.

You invested a lot of time and money into it, so managed to hold a bare 30% there while losing safe Republican states.

That's true. But I wouldn't be so sure you carried it...

After recounts...

JULIO: Big changes after recounts.. Tell us, Ted.

TED: Yes, Julio. We have a winner in Pennsylvania, and it's not a democrat. After the 1st recount, mayor Bloomberg has taken the lead by 305 votes. So Dean could still request a 2nd recount, but Bloomberg margin of victory may grow even more... Or not. The thing is, the mayordidn't win Philadelphia, but he came very close and managed to win the state. Congratulations, Michael!

SUSAN: Heeeeey, not so fast. I think Dean can still win the state if Philly counts its votes again Tongue.

JULIO: Remember the mayor of the city endorsed Bloomberg. I don't think he'll give the state to Dean. And this is still a democracy. Ted, any other news?

TED: Yes, Julio. Dean wins in North Carolina by the same margin we projected on election night, and that's 0.06%. No one requested a recount in South Carolina, and Dean margin was large enough we can give him the state. In Michigan, McCain's been able to keep his lead... Dean was very close, but it wasn't enough for him. He may request yet another recount, as the republican is leading him by only 0.03% now. Mississippi is surprisingly good news for Dean, as he wins by 0.04% there, it looks like the state "forgot" to count some votes in black-majority precints and some Dean votes were given to Ralph Nader...

SUSAN: That's very suspicious. I'd say it's a crime, it goes against democracy and it goes against our Constitution. Dean should request an investigation. What's Bloomberg opinion about this?

TED: Shut up.

JULIO: She's right this time, Ted. McCain was leading by 0.7%, that was a pretty large margin. It's obvious there have been irregularities. Is this Iran, or what?

TED: Let the Justice investigate. Every other state is won by the same candidate we projected on election night. So, PA and MS change hands. McCain didn't request a recount in AZ, but Dean did. And Bloomberg wins the state anyway!!
And Bloomberg took Alaska, BTW. Gravel, as expected, is the Senator-elect from the state, he smashed Ted Stevens.

Alaska (100% reporting) 3 EVs:
Michael Bloomberg 36.3%
Howard Dean 23.21%
John McCain 20.31%
Ralph Nader 20.18%

Alaska, Senate (100% reporting):
Mike Gravel (D) 50.46%
Ted Stevens (R) 35.28%
Todd Palin (AIP) 14.26%

Michigan (100% reporting) 17 EVs:
John McCain 30.74%
Howard Dean 30.71%
Michael Bloomberg 30.65%
Ralph Nader 7.9%

Pennsylvania (100% reporting) 21 EVs:
Michael Bloomberg 33.36%
Howard Dean 33.36%
John McCain 23.76%
Ralph Nader 9.52%

California (100% reporting) 55 EVs:
Howard Dean 38.52%
Michael Bloomberg 37.78%
John McCain 12.75%
Ralph Nader 10.96%

North Carolina (99% reporting) 15 EVs:
Howard Dean 33.03%
Michael Bloomberg 32.97%
John McCain 27.38%
Ralph Nader 6.62%

Mississippi (100% reporting) 6 EVs:
Howard Dean 32.1%
John McCain 32.06%
Michael Bloomberg 28.68%
Ralph Nader 7.16%

Arizona (100% reporting) 10 EVs:
Michael Bloomberg 32.64%
John McCain 32.56%
Howard Dean 27.37%
Ralph Nader 7.43%

Michael Bloomberg/Evan Bayh 250 EVs
Howard Dean/Patty Murray 239 EVs
John McCain/George Pataki 49 EVs
Ralph Nader/Dennis Kucinich 0 EVs

JULIO: Wow, this wasn't just a psychological win for mr. Bloomberg. Now he just needs 20 of McCain's 49 Electors to win the Presidency without the need of going to the House...

SUSAN: Now that you mention the House, I think our audience want to know what happened there. It's a given Pelosi is the big winner, but did democrats actually win seats? Will she need Blue Dogs to be reelected Speaker? How many independents and Greens will the House have in January?

TED: Just give me some time before we call every race... (That means later today or tomorrow). But the Senate is more important, and this is its new composition, with GA needing a run-off between the incumbent republican and independent Vernon Jones (remember Dick Lugar is an independent now):

(Forget about EVs, please.)

2 democrats = 90% red
1 democrat + 1 independent-democrat = 60% red
1 democrat + 1 independent = 30% red
1 democrat + 1 republican = yellow
1 republican + 1 independent = 30% blue
2 republicans = 90% blue

Democrats* 59 seats (+8)
Republicans 35 seats (-14)
Independents 5 seats (+5)

*Sanders and Lieberman counted as democrats

SUSAN: Hahaha, hilarious. Democrats almost have a super-majority. They need just one independent voting with them to stop fillibusters!

JULIO: Keep calm and drink tea, Susan. Some democrats are very conservative: Byrd, Ben Nelson, Musgrove... They may not vote with the rest of their mates everytime.

TED: And what happens if Bloomberg is elected President? It won't be easy to be President under a democrat majority in the House and a supermajority in the Senate. Poor guy, he'd better wait until 2012 after winning some seats for independents in 2010 and creating a platform around him. That's just my opinion.

JULIO: I think he should go for the Presidency now that he has the oportunity to. Imagine if Dean and democrats in the Senate and the House are popular come 2012... He'll have lost his opportunity.

Statement from the Howard Dean Campaign:

We are formally requesting re-recounts in the states of Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Michigan. The outcome of this election remains uncertain, and we are committed to ensuring that the outcome in these two states, decided by razor-thin margins, reflects the will of the voters there.

OOC: Just for the sake of fun and nostalgia (and attention whoring, why not?)

Newt Gingrich interviewed by Fox News:

Interviewer: Speaker Gingrich, what are your thoughts on the results after the recount?

Gingrich: I feel disappointed. Perhaps our party wasn't in the best shape, but this election was more than winnable, and, let's be candid, we got steamrolled in the Senate, House and Electoral College.

Interviewer: Do you think the GOP will be able to recover?

Gingrich: Why, of course. We have been in tough spots before, we have spent periods of twenty years out of the White House, and we also got third in 1912. Perhaps we weren't able to garner a lot of enthusiasm this time, but we will be back. The next president can be sure of it.

Interviewer: There has been some controversy about John McCain's electoral votes, what is your message for those Republican electors?

Gingrich: They should be free to vote in their conscience. But the people voted for those electors to represent the Senator in this election. Now, if he does not want said votes, they can always vote for a Republican... You know, like a former candidate. (Laughs) No, really, they could vote for Senator McCain, Senator Hagel, even Congressman Paul.

Interviewer: Last question, are you planning to stage another comeback in 2012?

Gingrich: Too early to tell, but the thought has crossed my mind. Of course, things can change a lot in four more years...

Interviewer: I think so... Well, thank you for your time, Speaker Gingrich.

Statement from the Bloomberg Campaign

In order to ensure a fair democratic process, the Bloomberg campaign requests a second recount in both Mississippi and North Carolina. We thank the voters across the nation for sending a message - a message that folks are tired of the two-party state and are ready for real change in America. Michael Bloomberg and Evan Bayh will provide just that.

It's November, 24th and we still don't have a President...

JULIO: Re-recounts now... What's your opinion on Bloomberg requesting a recount in Mississippi, Susan?

SUSAN: Not very smart, Julio. He should have requested a federal investigation, he put politics over democracy. I was expecting McCain to request a recount in MS again, but Bloomberg? Really? Doesn't he think something strange happened there? Republicans in the state wanted to kill democracy, but something didn't work for them in the recounts. I don't know what it is, but Bloomberg and Dean should be on the same camp here, even McCain should!

TED: Heh, I don't know what happened, but it was certainly very strange. How did it happen? It's obvious now the socialist carried MS...

JULIO: Even Ted agrees Dean is the winner in the state in MS, and after a 3rd count, it's even more obvious. Ted, show us what numbers tell us after the 2nd recount. Any state changes hands?

TED: Just watch yourself. Pennsylvania is even closer than it was before. Bloomberg leads by 84 votes now. Fascinating, now I think we can't be sure of his win in the state. I wasn't expecting this. I thought his lead was going to grow. This will cause some headaches, because if Dean is the final winner, he won't be elected President on the Electoral College, but it'd be very unlikely Bloomberg would Michigan is even closer, too, but McCain keeps a 0.02% lead. I think that's enough, after counting votes for the third time...

Michigan (100% reporting) 17 EVs:
John McCain 30.73%
Howard Dean 30.71%
Michael Bloomberg 30.65%
Ralph Nader 7.91%

Pennsylvania (100% reporting) 21 EVs:
Michael Bloomberg 33.36%
Howard Dean 33.36%
John McCain 23.76%
Ralph Nader 9.52%

North Carolina (99% reporting) 15 EVs:
Howard Dean 33.03%
Michael Bloomberg 32.97%
John McCain 27.38%
Ralph Nader 6.62%

Mississippi (100% reporting) 6 EVs:
Howard Dean 32.11%
John McCain 32.06%
Michael Bloomberg 28.67%
Ralph Nader 7.16%

Arizona (100% reporting) 10 EVs:
Michael Bloomberg 32.64%
John McCain 32.56%
Howard Dean 27.37%
Ralph Nader 7.43%

JULIO: Hahaha, has something like this happened before?

SUSAN: Florida 2000 was a landslide compared to Pennsylvania 2008. Anyway, I think Bloomberg will finally win the state, I don't feel very optimistic today. And even if he doesn't, I think McCain has released a clear message for his electors: vote for Bloomberg if you don't want a democrat in the Presidency. The Mississippi scandal will hit Bloomberg with the public opinion after he requested a recount instead of reporting irregularities, but I'm sure it won't change anything among McCain electors. It could even help, I'd say.

(House later today, after you, candidates, say something about all of this.)

New York Times
Nader Camp will request Federal Investigation on MS and PA, claims Voter Suppression

Ralph Nader will be requesting a federal investigation on the Mississipi Case. "Every vote should be counted and we ought to respect the law; voting has been clearly supressed and manipulated there!" told Nader in a Press Conference. Nader has also shown his opposition to John McCain's suggestion for Republicans to endorse Bloomberg: "I hope that Bloomber ignore those guys that will try to make his White House become a Bush's Third Term". Teresa Amatho, Nader Campaign Chief of Staff, declared that they would  also request a federal investigation on Pennsilvanya.

Mr. Nader points out that all of this wouldn't be happening if we had federally organized instant run-off presidential election. "This November 4th of 2008 is definitely the day that the Electoral College went broke. Frankly, we are seeing the same crazy things happening every election cycle since 2000, then we had the crazy Florida Recounts, on 2004 we have voting suppression all across the country and problems in Ohio that could have given Kerry the Presidency and now we have many states decided by less than hundreds of voters! The Electoral College must go!"

Ms. Barbara Lee, Democratic Representative of California and former supporter of Nader, decided to join forces with Carol Moseley to make the "Blacks against Voter Suppression" PAC that has received support all across the aisle; from Ralph Nader, Jesse Ventura and Rocky Anderson to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. The Green Party is also showing its strong stance on the issue; promoting Conferences all across the US to talk about Electoral Reform and Voter Suppression as well. It seems that it will take a long time until we know who is going to be the next President of the United States.

The Murray Bunker: Statement on all this Recount Crap

"It's obvious that the system we currently have is broken. Too many Americans are being disenfranchised due to the McCain-Bloomberg campaign's dirty tricks in Mississippi, and we can't even find a winner in Pennsylvania. If we want to see clean elections, and not 2000 redux every time there's a close election, we need to abolish or at least significantly reform the Electoral College. Governor Dean and I will do that - of course, now that voting's over, I suppose my pleas are falling upon the ears of my colleagues in the lower chamber of Congress, all of whom I urge to make the right choice when they convene. Even if Mayor Bloomberg and Senator Bayh win, I will stand by their side and work to reform our electoral system."

The Dean campaign will formally request recounts in Pennsylvania and Michigan once again. This entire debacle indeed shows where the Electoral College can go horribly wrong, just as it did in 2000. Whether or not Howard and Patty are President and VP by January, they will push for a constitutional amendment to replace the Electoral College with a National Popular Vote.

Statement from the Bloomberg Campaign

We are absolutely committed to ensuring that an extremely democratic and fair election was held, and our campaign is deeply worried but what is ongoing in Mississippi - whether it be a state the Mayor placed first, second, or third in, our campaign wants the recounts to ensure that America's will is heard. And especially in a state where the results flip from one count to the next - a third count is needed to determine the accurateness. We aren't playing politics - we know we aren't going to win Mississippi regardless. We just want to insure that The People's will is done in this election.

We are also encouraged by statements made by prominent Democrats on the need to abolish the Electoral College, as this is a position Mayor Bloomberg has held for many years.

SUSAN: Before a 3rd recount takes place, let's release the U.S. House results, guys!

TED: OK, but only if you primise me you will shut up.

JULIO: Yeah. Susan, be quiet, please. I'm tired, I haven't had a shower since the election night began and I want to finish this programme before December. Your voice is so annoying...

TED: Now I realize that McCain endorsing Bloomberg before polls closed in CA was a bad idea. It cost many seats in California. Republicans must be very angry with him, they are dead in the water in the state. Let's start in alphabetical order...:

Winners

Alabama (3 R, 3 D, 1 I; -2 R, +1 D, + 1 I):
Jo Bonner (R), Bobby Bright (I), Joshua Segall (D), Robert Aderholt (R), Parker Griffith (D), Spencer Bachus (R) and Artur Davis (D).

Alaska (1 D; +1 D):

Colorado (4 D, 2 R, 1 I; +1 I, -1 R):
Dianne DeGette (D), Jared Polis (D), John Salazar (D), Betsy Markey (I; defeats Marilyn Musgrave with the support of democrats), Doug Lamborn (R), Mike Coffman (R) an Ed Perlmutter (D).

Dealware (1 I; -1 R, +1 I):
Mike Castle (I; became an indepenent before the election, ran without GOP opposition).

JULIO: Oh, that's good news for democrats and independents, specially for independents.

TED: Yes, certainly. I wasn't expecting 7 inependents in California... Some of them were self-funders, but hey, they hadn't the needed name recognition to win... Polls weren't predicting this. McCain helped big, but it's not only him. When he endorsed Bloomberg, many Californians had already voted. How did it happen? I don't know. Probably some democrats decided to vote independent just to get rid of republicans... Connecticut is surprising, too. Not good news for democrats in the state, but I am sure Nancy Pelosi will be smiling when we release every state. Now let's make a stop, I need a glass of water.

SUSAN: I'm so glad... A green candidate in Arkansas!!! Hahahaha, I can't believe it!!! Don't wake me up! And Pelosi will be reelected Speaker, most likely. I don't worry if Bloomberg wins anymore, he will have to deal with democrats in the Senate and the House!

OOC: I think the McCain endorsement might be just a little bit exaggerated - probably over 90% of the state had voted at the time of his endorsement, and while it might have hurt Republicans some in those remaining 10%, I don't think it would have been this extreme. Smiley

Ted agrees with you:

However, Bloomberg tripled McCain in California. I think the GOP brand wasn't enough to save some republicans. And democrats decided that they wouldn't waste their vote and vote for a democrat, and instead voted for the independent. And McCain endorsement probably cost republicans in 2 or 3 CDs. An, with their Presidential candidate winning less than 13% of the vote, with a very unpopular Governor endorsing Bloomberg and a bad campaign, they were able to win more seats than independents (8 vs. 7).

Mike Gravel Victory Speech!

I'd like to thank the people of the great state of Alaska for once again choosing me as their United States Senator! While there's still a mess of a Presidential race going on, I'm thankful that I, at least, know where I'll be for the next six years, hopefully alongside of now-Rep. Begich. Hopefully our Constitutional system can work as it should, and a rightful winner is finally determined. An investigation may be necessary, especially with the disturbing reports out of Mississippi, but hopefully we'll have a President soon.
