Daschle post-Iowa speech

It's a dead heat, following Iowa and with Senator Kerry's expected win in New Hampshire, can I continue? I will continue to New Hampshire, where the margin of my defeat will determine, just what to do next...

No Matter, what happens next this was a win for all Democrats, whether you supported Senator Kerry or myself, because it shows we truly have a vibrant party.

Meet and Greet in Sea-Tac, Washington

Good Afternoon! Today, I come to you, seeking not just votes in the "beauty contest" on leap day, but your votes on caucus day on Super Tuesday. Why? Senator Kerry is a strong candidate no doubt, but he isn't a fit for this part of the country. And I? I can't really say I'm a perfect fit either... but I'm better than Kerry in this light blue state. Remember, he's from dark blue Massachusetts, I have similar policies and am from Orange South Dakota. He fits his state well, not necessarily, yours, or New Hampshire's or mine.

Meet and Greet in Sanford, Florida

January, 27

Meet and Greet in Hagarstown, Maryland

Meet and Greet in Walton, West Virginia

Hello Reds fans! Congratulations on getting Ken Griffey Jr... I came from Washington earlier this week, and they told me to tell you he's a keeper! However Sports has a dark side. From Cocaine abuse in the 1980's to Steroid suspicions today, some of believe that the games we love are dirty... and yet others believe they can do no wrong... which is why with the help of noted Cardinals fan Senator Ashcroft we believe we have a solution, To require all professional  athletes in U.S sports to undergo World Anti Doping Agency standard testing.

Meet and Greet in Depere, Wisconsin

January 31

Rally in Rochester, Minnesota
Good Morning! Senator Kerry Leads here, but I intend to make this a horse race. And you can help. Keep an eye on this race, with Super Tuesday one and half months away... and be ready to vote.

We must consider the likelihood of a massive loss in New Hampshire. The odds of our campaign being able to function in such a scenario is unknown..

Fundraiser, Brookville, New York

Jack Kemp for President Campaign Schedule: January 25th - February 1st, 2000

"Big state, small state, we are going to compete everywhere and anywhere for your vote. Americans want to hear the message of fiscal responsibility, economic feasability, and simply getting out of the way of innovative people. Hawaii has many resources, and plenty of reason for a simple economic structure, and this may be the only state where Republicans want Immigration Reform as much as I do *chuckles*."

January 25th, 2000 (with Bob Dole, Norman Schwarzkopf):
Barnstorming in Honolulu, Hawaii
Town Hall in Ewa, Hawaii
Meet and Greet in Walalua, Hawaii
Meet and Greet in Wailou, Hawaii
Meet and Greet in Hawi, Hawaii

January 26th, 2000 (With Carroll Campbell, Jim DeMint, and Mark Sanford):
Town Hall in Clemson, South Carolina
Town Hall in Anderson, South Carolina
Meet and Greet in Laurens, South Carolina
Barnstorming in Columbia, South Carolina
Barnstorming in Hartsville, South Carolina
Meet and Greet in Darlington, South Carolina

"The only way morality can be protected in this country is by first, looking at the way we look at our government. Historians all over, look at the history of this country as a history of Government. I don't think that way, I think this is a country based on accomplishments of people. We need a people based Government, and that's exactly what Jack Kemp stands for, and he will fight for smaller government at any turn!"

January 27th, 2000 (With Bob Dole):
Town Hall in Millsboro, Delaware
Barnstorming in Milton, Delaware
Town Hall in Rising Sun, Delaware
Barnstorming in Dover, Delaware
Meet and Greet in Leipsic, Delaware
Meet and Greet in Delaware City, Delaware

January 28th, 2000 (with Warren Rudman, Bob Dole):

8:30 AM: Town Hall in Troy, New Hampshire
10:00 AM: Barnstorming in Peterborough, New Hampshire

4:00 PM: Barnstorming in Salem, New Hampshire
6:00 PM: Dinner with Campaign Staff in Derry, New Hampshire
8:30 PM: Rally in Manchester, New Hampshire

"I feel pretty good today! *cheers* Polls show us closing in on a lead in the state of New Hampshire, and it looks like we could win a strong victory in the state. I think that's because New Hampshire voters have looked at my record, and have seen what I have done as Congressman, as Housing Department Secretary, and see that I am working on behalf of the people of this country to bring growth. I'm not on an agenda, I am doing what it takes to turn this country around!"

January 29th, 2000 (with Bob Dole, Steve Merrill):
6:00 AM: Breakfast with Campaign Staff in Hooksett, New Hampshire
8:30 AM: Meet and Greet in Pembroke, New Hampshire

6:00 AM: Breakfast with Campaign Staff in Somersworth, New Hampshire
8:30 AM: Q&A with Portsmouth Press

3:00 PM: Town Hall in Sutton, New Hampshire
5:30 PM: Dinner with Supporters in Newport, New Hampshire
8:30 PM: Barnstorming in Claremont, New Hampshire

"I'll go ahead and take this one for Jack: I'm a moderate Republican. You may be a conservative Republican, and you know, I have seen many conservatives like Carroll Campbell endorse Jack as the nominee. Let me tell you something: we need a candidate with a broad coalition. Who is can appeal to all types of people. I haven't seen that appeal with Vice President Quayle. It's up to him to prove me wrong."

January 31st, 2000 (With Norman Schwarzkopf, Steve Merrill):
6:00 AM: Breakfast with Supporters in Lebanon, New Hampshire
8:30 AM: Town Hall in Einfield, New HAmpshire
10:00 AM: Town Hall in Hanover, New Hampshire

1:00 PM: Lunch with Campaign Staff in North Woodstock, New Hampshire
2:30 PM: Meet and Greet in Woodsville, New Hampshire
3:30 PM: Meet and Greet in Lisbon, New Hampshire
4:30 PM: Meet and Greet in Littleton, New Hampshire
5:30 PM: Dinner with Supporters in Groveton, New Hampshire
8:30 PM: Appearance on Hannity & Colmes

"Voters have asked me so much on this, and I basically just go down to two words now: Flat Tax. We need to make it so that the job creators can hire more people and push more people into prosperity. the Clinton Democrats don't believe in the economics, but it's the right way to go, and you can check that. In addition, we are going after corporate rates, tax loopholes, and many other things that clog up the tax code. Americans don't want this clumpy mess we have, and instead, we should go with something simple."

February 1st, 2000 (With Warren Rudman, Steve Merrill, and Norman Schwarzkopf):

Excerpt: Jack Kemp speaks at New Hampshire Right to Life

"There is a war going on. It's not a war where solidiers are going out and fighting. It's a war that is much more into someones life. It's abortion. We are seeing something that is beyond my reach. I think we've stood behind it for far too long.

I'm aware national Right to Life has endorsed my opponent, Dan Quayle, but rest assured, I have fought years and years against this crusade against the living. I am Pro-Life through and through. The common misnomer is that by being for Life, you are against choice. I resent that, as someone who fights for consumer choice, choice to do as they please, and even choice to enter this country as a citizen, I am pro-choice. But I am pro-life as well, something Clinton Democrats can't understand. I want our country to respect life, from the cradle to the grave, and that means we must fight from the beginning. I will continue to fight for those values, and I hope you continue to fight with me. Thank you.

Campaign staff pushes hard closing in on New Hampshire Primary, Internal Polls in campaigns shows close race

Concord, New Hampshire -- with the New Hampshire Primary closing in, the Kemp camp is not taking anything for granted. They have spent the entire week building up resources in New Hampshire, going with ads, and sending Former Senator Warren Rudman out at nearly every event. This is going to be a fight to the death, and it seems its between Kemp, Powell, and Quayle.

Internal Polling (NH):
28% Kemp
27% Quayle
25% Powell

16% McCain
4% Undecided

+/- 3% Error

Rollins: Surprisingly close Iowa standing has Campaign ready to go

New York City, New York -- On Face the Nation, spin master and Campaign Manager for the Kemp 2000 Ed Rollins has put out the talking point for the campaign. Noting the evangelical numbers of Iowa as well as the social conservative strain in the state, the manager made it clear that making Iowa as close as it was was a very solid performance for Kemp:

"He supports immigration reform, he supports some of the welfare programs, and while he is very pro-life, he hasn't been as actively courting some of the more christian voters, due to his less than super conservative stands on family values issues. Nevertheless, we came close to winning this evangelically very heavy state. New Hampshire is Jack's kind of state, and I think we plan to take it."

Vice President Dan Quayle's Schedule:
(January 25-February 1)Sad

"We won in Iowa, and we are ready to win the Live Free or Die State! This campaign has something to offer to all sectors of the party, and the polls seem to agree. I wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have wanted on the state, but I'm confident that we will defeat Senator McCain and General Powell here! We already had great ground game thanks to Governor Sununu, and we are going all-out here. What do you say, New Hampshire? Will you help me overcome the odds for the second time and win here as well?"

January 25th:
-Targeting Manchester:
-Manning the phones at Manchester HQ with volunteers.
-Tour of local stores around the city.
-Visit the Southern New Hampshire University and talk to students.
-Meeting with Republican Officers and volunteers of the NRA.
-Rally with speech on foreign policy.
-Visit to the New Hampshire Union Leader.
-Special Town Hall with John Sununu.

"The Union Leader is the most important newspaper in this state, and while not all of the endorsed candidate won the primary, this paper ofter bets on a winning horse that has values and leadership. Their endorsement has always been important for me, as I came at a time in which I had little hopes here in New Hampshire. But they endorsed me, they gave me chance, and look where I am now. I ask you to take a chance, to fight for your candidate, to embrace this wonderful political process! When November comes, I want you to say: God, I did my best to be a part of the process. You won't regret it."

January 26th:
-Targeting Nashua:
-Breakfast with supporters in Nashua HQ.
-Meeting Former President Bush at Nashua Muncipal Airport.
 -Touring Nashua with George Bush:
-Rally with speech on the Clinton legacy.
-Greeting voters in the center of Nashua.
-Barnstorming rural areas near Nashua with National Right to Life Committee volunteers.

"Some say I give President Bush too much credit, that I exaggerate his qualities just to increase my chances, but I absolutely disagree with that. The administration in which I served was not perfect, and we made mistakes. You proved that to us when Pat Buchanan almost won here, and I will never forget the lesson you gave all of us. New Hampshire is an independent state, a free state, a state that knows we need a good President. And be honest with me, who do you prefer? The broken and unfaithful leadership of Bill Clinton or the honest statesmanship of George Bush?"

January 27th:
-Rochester/Concord Tour:
 -Rochester:
-Barnstorming the city with Pete Wilson.
  -Rally with Pete Wilson.
  -Interview with local media.
 -Concord:
  -Visit to Granite State College.
-Rally with speech on the economy.
-Meeting with volunteers and supporters and visiting some neighborhoods.

"You are the future of America, and you certainly don't need Dan Quayle of all people to tell you that. You see, young people like yourselves are always aware that a great task lies ahead, but we are the ones who often forget about that. I want to fight for college students and young people as well, for the GOP is not only the party of the angry old men, as some say. Everybody who believes that we can't win the youth vote is absolutely wrong, and I plan to prove it on November! For I said I want people to participate, and who better than young people?"

January 28th:
-Town Halls, Day I:
-With President Bush and Governor Sununu:
-Town Hall in Lebanon, NH. (Immigration)
-Town Hall in Laconia, NH. (Defense)
-Town Hall in Somersworth, NH. (Taxes and Deficits)
-Town Hall in Amherst, NH. (Family Values)
-Town Hall in Berlin, NH. (The 21st Century)
-Town Hall in Exeter, NH. (Quayle: The Real Alternative to Bill Clinton)

"Next question? Why I am the alternative? I know, perhaps I don't have as much gravitas as General Powell does, but one thing I have is enthusiasm. Bill Clinton also had enthusiasm, but he misused it. He lied to the people and he showed no remorse about it, which leads me to the lack of values we see on many politicians today. I promise new leadership, a moral and strong kind of leadership that a President should be supposed to have. I have been in politics for all of my life, and while gaffes are a part of my problem, I have never been accused of lacking ethics!"

January 29th:
-Town Halls, Day II:
-With Governor Bush and Governor Wilson:
-Town Hall in Franklin, NH. (Health Care)
-Town Hall in Wilford, NH. (Education)
-Town Hall in Londonderry, NH. (The Quayle Platform)
-Town Hall in Pelham, NH. (America: The lone superpower)
-Town Hall in Bow, NH. (Social Values)
-Town Hall in Hudson, NH. (Crime)

"I'm quite concerned about crime on this country. Many of you in the audience probably are as well, for we have shifted our policy towards a soft approach, and that is fundamently wrong. I acknowledge the importance of rehabilitation for inmates, but let's be serious, be are allowing many criminals to run rampant without anyone to stop it. And I assure you, I'm not soft on crime at all."

January 30th:
-Bus Tour, Day I:
-With John Sununu and volunteers from the NRA and the Right to Life Committee:
  -Bus Tour in Salem, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Dover, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Merrimack, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Derry, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Keene, NH.
  -Rally in Manchester, NH.

"One of the best parts of this whole campaign has been travelling with my family across the nation. It would be hard for me as a family man to be separated for them, and during these months they have taught me many things that I will never forget. They thought me things about family values that I never spoke of, and they gave me a new perspective on things. I won't say family values is my main theme, but it is very important. Families are the base of this country, and if we can give them more strenght with the help of a Republican White House, so be it!"

January 31st:
-Bus Tour, Day II:
-With John Sununu and volunteers from the NRA and the Right to Life Committee:
  -Bus Tour in Bedford, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Portsmouth, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Windham, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Claremont, NH.
  -Bus Tour in Hampton, NH.
  -Rally in Nashua, NH.

"See, Warren Rudman said yesterday that I didn't have the necessary appeal to create a broad coalition. I respect the man and his opinion, and he might have been right a few months ago. But the truth is that this campaign has something to offer to all Republicans, regardless on my focus on family and social values. Most Republicans want a strong foreign policy and most Republicans want dignity on the White House, and most of us offer just that. I have been endorsed with President Bush, Governor Wilson, Governor Engler, Representative Kasich and many other brilliant Republicans, and while their views differ, they feel this campaign can deliver a coherent and strong (but inclusive) message. If that's not a broad coalition, I don't know what it is."

February 1st:
-Primary Day!:
-Meeting and breakfast with Campaign Staff (including Kyle McSlarrow and Craig Withney, but excluding Baker and the SC staff) in Manchester HQ.
-GOTV efforts across Manchester, Nashua, Rochester and Concord.
 -Coordinating volunteers in rural areas.
-Final Campaign Event with Pete Wilson, John Sununu, George Bush and George HW Bush.
 -Watching results in Campaign HQ.

"Primary time, ladies and gentlemen! Let us prove the nation that we can win everywhere! Second in Alaska, First in Iowa, and First tonight as well! We can do it, I know we can do it, and we will! We have a strong message, a detailed platform, a coherent strategy and a good record to run on! As Representative, Senator and Vice-President I have done my best to fight for what I believe is right and best for all Americans, and that fight goes on tonight! For tonight... Tonight we prove to Republicans and Democrats alive that Dan Quayle is here to stay!"

Quayle 2000:

January 25th:

At Quayle 2000 National Headquarters in Phoenix, AZ, Campaign Manager Kyle McSlarrow delivered the next Quayle update following Craig Withney's trip to New Hamsphire. After joking with the journalists, a relaxed McSlarrow gave a full update on what's going on:

Quayle Team:

-David J. Doyle (Midwest Chair) and James Baker (South Chair) have created a solid organization there, with contacts in all states an at least one office per state. As a result, more and more Republican officers and volunteersb are joining each day.
-All staff (except minor people and Deputy Manager John Peshong, in charge of March states) are to be sent to New Hampshire, to coordinate a winning strategy.

Infrastructure:

-New Hampshire: With all offices working smoothely, staffers are trying to organize groups of volunteers to travel across the state for the week to "send the message" to every last part of rural New Hampshire, while Quayle and the rest are touring the big cities. The idea is to maximize turnout everywhere to repeat the Iowa victory.

Fundraising:

-Mr. Richard Norman, Chief Fundraising Officer, reports that the Quayle victory in Iowa has created a fantastic financial environment. More and more donors are coming in, and Normal says that the campaign has enough money to go all the way to South Carolina without having to worry, mostly thanks to the grassroots.

Dan Quayle Ad#6: Heir and Pioneer:

States: New Hampshire, Hawaii, Delaware and South Carolina:

Voiceover: Dan Quayle has a curious mixture of qualities. He represents a past and a future, in the time in which America looks ahead without knowing what will happen next. As a very effective Senator and George Bush's loyal Vice-President, Dan Quayle is the heir of Republican sucess in the final decades of this century. But he is also a pioneer, a man who saw the endless possiblities that the GOP has to offer, a man who upset the poweful Birch Bayh in 1980, who took the fight for family values when no one else wanted to, he is the man who will lead America to the 21st Century.

Quayle: I take my job in a serious way, and I believe that by working hard we can create a century of progress, liberty and sucess for America. With a good link to the past, and a good attitude toward the future, we can do it.

VoiceoverSadNow it's the time, vote Dan Quayle for President!

Excerpt: Q&A Session with Portsmouth Media

Q: Secretary Kemp, you could explain why your idea of a 10th Amendment-based Education style could be different from the way education is done now?

A: "Thank you for the question, and it brings up an interesting point: the Department of Education. Nowadays, it's been around for twenty years, so a lot of people have lived with it, and the idea of eliminating it is foreign to them. However, I am here to say that we can clearly do without the department. Education is a system that is not being handled well by the federal government. The continued centralization of education has helped to cause the problems with students we've been having. Compared to other nations, we are falling behind. The only way we can make it better is to give it back to the states and let Governors, who more intimately know their states, to take control. It's the simple factor of bureacracy, if there is less bureacracy their and more individual choice, I think it will make the whole system better."

...

Q:"Some say your campaign is overly focused on fiscal policy. What do you say to that mindset?"

A: "Well, here we go again. I've pushed for a conservative fiscal policy because that's my belief system. I have also talked about the fact that I think we need to lower our military presence across the world, create an immigration system that works, put education back in the hands of the states, and creating a Governors Council so that we can more effectively push policy. In addition, we have pushed a campaign defending life and liberty across this nation, and I think we are the campaign most apt to defeat Senators Kerry or Daschle when it comes down to it."

...

Q: "Why do you think you would be a better President than Dan Quayle?"

A: "I have no doubts about Dan Quayle's ability. Compared to his previous runs, he's had a massive temperament, and has kept in control in talking and has been very good. I think he's run a campaign that has turned around his image. However, I think that I am more apt to be President because I have experience passing some of the biggest pieces of legislation we've ever had. I've pushed forward policies of the Reagan and, to a lesser extent, the Bush administration, and I think I can do far more than I've already done as President. I mention policy a lot, I wanted this to be an informative campaign, not a fluff piece, but I know a President is more than a policy wonk. I will be one who goes out there and uses the bully pulpit to get things done, not just rely on my party, but on the American people."

Quayle Surrogates:

George Bush stands for Quayle in New Hampshire:

"New Hampshire, I had to face this state's primary three times, and it wasn't easy. As a state you taught me three lessons: When Ronald Reagan defeated me in 1980, you showed me humility. When I defeated Bob Dole in 1988, you taught me about hope. And when you picked me over Pat Buchanan in 1992, despite all troubles, you taught me that this state, with it's independent spirit, can forgive a man. I won't tell you to vote for Dan, for I think you already saw in him what you saw in me all those years ago."

Sununu says: It's time:

"As Governor of the Live Free or Die state I have seen many candidates, many races, many triumphs and many defeats. And across this nation I saw missed chances, I saw great candidates who where defeated by false notions. Dan Quayle has managed to stage his comeback, but many still say that he is an idiot, that he can't win, that he is extreme. I know the man, ladies and gentlement, and this is his time. No more missed chances, please."

Wilson on electability: Quayle is being underestimated:

"Back in 1996 I was one of the more electable candidates, or so they said. I am a man who fights in a state that is becoming more and more Democratic, but I have managed to overcome the odds. Electability is about having a good image, about being able to do the job, about being able to compromise. And Dan, despite his ocasional troubles with gaffes, is an electable candidate."

Kasich: He is the conservative fighter we need:

"Our leaders must know when and how to fight. To do so, to stand up for what we believe against all odds in the sign of a leader. And I saw this man fighting ten years ago with people openly saying he was out of his mind. But he kept fighting, and in the end, it looks like he prevailed. I think that's exactly what we want to see in a President."

New Hampshire Democratic Primary
John Kerry - 54.03%
Tom Daschle - 45.97%

KERRY WINS

In what was a smaller margin of victory than what many had expected, John Kerry beat out Tom Daschle in New Hampshire. Because the spread was less than 10 points between the two, however, when it was 20 a few weeks ago, the Daschle camp will likely march on with new momentum in the states ahead.

New Hampshire Republican Primary
Jack Kemp - 26.96%
Dan Quayle - 26.36%
Colin Powell - 24.90%
John McCain - 21.78%

KEMP WINS

In a nail-biter of a primary, Jack Kemp beat out Dan Quayle by only about a third of a percent. Kemp has had the superior organization in the state for months and is well liked by many Republicans here, although Quayle has exceeded analysts' expectations with a powerful week-long barnstorming session. Colin Powell and John McCain, both of who have been strong in the polls in NH, have done more poorly than what was projected.

Dan Quayle's Speech after NH Primary results:

"Well, what can I say? I'm proud of this campaign tonight! We were fourth in New Hampshire before the Iowa Caucuses, and we fought Jack Kemp all the way to a narrow second place, even narrower than Iowa itself! (Applause) Of course, I just called Secretary Kemp to congratulate him for a hard-earned victory, and I called General Powell and Senator McCain as well, for they also ran excellent campaigns.

I think the New Hampshire results reveal that this is close to becoming a two-man race, and I'm ready for the challenge. We are going to Delaware, and South Carolina, to Arizona and Michigan, and then to Super Tuesday! As I promised, we are not stopping until we win the nomination and the White House!

Another thing that pleases me about this primary is the fact that I managed to disprove another false perception about myself. Warren Rudman said I couldn't create a winning broad coalition, but when you manage to convince so many people in two very different states, you must be doing something right. I would also like to thank our volunteers as always, they have done a magnificent job! Same goes for our staff, which had the honor of being commanded by John Sununu, one of my best friends and a truly brilliant man.

Ladies and gentlemen, our journey to the White House goes on!"

Daschle on New Hampshire results

It's been a long road here, and you've given me the strength to continue to Super Tuesday. Hopefully I will see all of you in November... To Senator, Kerry- You've fought a great race so far and may the best candidate be the Nominee. To the the people of Washington and Delaware- even though your states may not have delegates (before Super Tuesday) you are just as important as the states before you and after you.

Jack Kemp Victory Speech

"It's late, and we just got the last precincts: we've got it! *wild applause*

Dan Quayle called us to congratulate us on our victory, and I want to thank him for continuing to put up an effort and make this race of ideas. Colin Powell and John McCain, too, have run respectable campaigns, and whoever is the nominee will be someone with the experience and character to win. I will say this though: We have made it to the big time! Our message of a brighter future for America is growing. People have seen the effects of a President who lies to get what he wants, who triangulates on the issues instead of facing the voters, and now Americans want someone who will strictly say the truth to them. The truth is: our tax code is destructive, government is too intrusive, and it's time we made government smaller and people bigger! *applause*

Next up is Delaware, Hawaii, and South Carolina, and those three states might be some of the most different states I have seen. Delaware is a lean liberal state with a great tax code, Hawaii is a state where we haven't had much success as of late, and South Carolina is in the south. However, this campaign has the broad based appeal, the skills, and the beliefs that can win in those areas. It speaks to what we need from a nominee: someone who is going to be a strong leader in November and beat John Kerry or Tom Daschle, and this New Hampshire win has proven that. Let's go out there and win!"

You were thinking of the 2012 game, Clinton. Sorry to hear about the confusion, though.

"I congratulate Jack Kemp on his victory tonight and I especially want to thank all you, the passionate supporters who are the backbone of this campaign. I wouldn't be where I am without you. I'm sorry, we couldn't take the gold tonight, but you can't win them all. Thank you all very much, God Bless and God Bless America."

OOC: I think we should have a debate, considering that all of us are still standing after Iowa and New Hampshire. Perhaps a joint debate with democrats and republicans?

Tom Daschle is looking more confident for becoming the Democratic nominee than a few weeks ago, having made New Hampshire more competitive than anticipated. Now Daschle and John Kerry are duking it out, with Super Tuesday potentially deciding who is the victor. Jack Kemp and Dan Quayle have both had a very good week, with Kemp winning New Hampshire and with Quayle pulling a close second. Now the two are beginning to pull away from the other two Republicans, Colin Powell and John McCain, in the polls. Analysts say that Powell must be more committed in his campaigning (hint, hint), or else he will continue to lose the next primaries. McCain's campaign looks to outright be deflating, after missing the best chance of victory in New Hampshire. How much longer can his candidacy go on for?

Delegate Numbers

Democrats
Tom Daschle: 20/1144
John Kerry: 20/1144

Republicans
Jack Kemp: 24/1144
John McCain: 8/1144
Colin Powell:14/1144
Dan Quayle: 21/1144

Fundraising Numbers (October 1, 1999-February 1, 2000)

Democrats
Tom Daschle: $23.6 million
John Kerry: $25.1 million

Republicans
Jack Kemp: $21.5 million
John McCain: $12.9 million
Colin Powell: $18.8 million
Dan Quayle: $20.1 million

Debate Questions

Democrats
1. To both candidates, what is your stance on federal tax policy?
2. To both candidates, what is the one thing that makes you different from your opponent on this stage?
3. Senator Daschle, as the Senate Minority Leader, people have often accused you of being part of the problem with such a strong link to Washington. How do you respond to such claims?
4. Senator Kerry, you have been described by critics as "dull," "bland," and "boring." Are such statements true, and do you think that this persona of you would have any effect with how you work in the White House?

Republicans
1. To all candidates, what would you change in the healthcare system of this country?
2. To all candidates, who are people that you are considering to be your running mate? Are any of them on this stage tonight?
3. Secretary Kemp, some in the party say that you focus too much on economic policy when there are other issues to reach voters on as well. What are your other priorities should you become President?
4. Vice President Quayle, you now lead nationally, something that many didn't expect at first. However, should you become the nominee, how can you best unite the different factions of your party to commit to you when November rolls around?
5. General Powell, you have lost in the first few primaries, two of which you had a good position to win. Do you believe that your campaign has a messaging problem, and how can you best connect with voters in the upcoming contests?
6. Senator McCain, you've struggled in the primaries so far, and you missed your best opportunity to win in New Hampshire. Do you believe that the media is just underestimating you, and that you still have what it takes to win?

"What we've seen over the past 8 years is a rapidly falling federal debt and the first balanced budget in decades. This, is thanks to the responsible budgeting of our President. We owe this to making the better off pay their fair share in taxes, and from shifting the tax burden off of the backs of working families.

Our nation is enjoying peace and economic prosperity, and that is why I feel comfortable putting forward a plan for middle class tax relief. I will cut middle class taxes, those making $100,000 or less, by 5%. And to insure that we stay in the green, I'll raise revenue on our more better off citizens by 4%."

"Well for one, I think I'm a better looking guy (*Audience laughter). No, to answer your question, my opponent represents the Washingtonian, slash and burn politics of old. As Minority Leader, Senator Daschle has only contributed to the problems and gridlock of Congress.

The American people want something New, and that is what I offer. I offer Change. I offer Universal Health Insurance to those who've been turned away by those greedy insurance companies. I offer your family a new path into the 21st Century, one that looks out for the rights of all Americans, regardless of gender, race, income, or sexual orientation."

"We'll they wouldn't be critics if they didn't spew a bit of crap every now and then. I think if you witnessed what was happening in this campaign, all of the excitement in the faces of our volunteers and our supporters, we wouldn't even be discussing this right now.

I've learned two things in my years in public office: One, never anger the media. It'll ruin you. And two, don't let what people say get you down. I have a laser focus on getting things done for working families and the American people, and if me being "boring" is the best my critics can come up with, I don't see much trouble arising in the four years I'd spend in the White House."
