Considering our current financial situation, I wouldn't support it at a federal level. However, I would support something close to it at a state level if my state was in good fiscal order.

I might, just as long as the rate is what the lowest bracket pays now.

In other words, tax cuts for everyone but the working poor. You're a good Republican, Oldies.

In fairness, that's what a flat tax always is, regardless of the rate. A combination of this and tax hikes for everyone but the millionaires.

Under most - but certainly not all - circumstances I would oppose the flat tax. Progressive taxes are not the only viable path to a more just distribution of resources in society. But because most people who support the flat tax would reject the accompanying policies I'd like to see put in place, for the sake of practicality it seems proper for me to vote "no" in this thread's poll rather than abstaining.

^What they said a million times over. But.....
I think we should have a Progressive Tax System, but with lower rates across the board.

Tell me, in which tax system would you consider a flat income tax to be "fair"? I like to think I have some fantasy with regards to tax policy, but I can't think of any such scenario.

No. Wages in this country for the middle class have suffered enough over the past 30-40 years. A flat tax would only further the direction of wealth to the top.

No, although I think taxes could be kept reasonably low if we started spending on things we need, like caring for our own people, and cut the defense budget, the military budget, the war budget, the overseas bases, the corporate subsidies, and so on.

First, I don't know of any Republicans who oppose cutting taxes for the working poor.  And second, we're not raising taxes on them either.  If anything, the rate should be lower than what they pay now.

The lowest income bracket pays nothing.

If the rate is too low, so as not to punish the poor even more, the richest makes out like literal bandits... But the rate can't be too high either. Generally the people in favour of a flat tax, don't really think of the consequences beyond "taxes should be low" ... there's almost no practical application of a flat tax that doesn't re-distribute from the poor to the advantage of the rich and also produces less revenue, so it guts public services ... for whom? The poor. it's an ideological bog of an idea... But hey, it works well in Russia.

If it's a flat tax on wages or a capped flat tax, that would be true; however, if it's a non-capped flat tax on income, it isn't, or if it's a flat sales tax that uses a rebate or exemption system it's not regressive.
