Election Night 2020
with your hosts, Lester Holt and Chuck Todd

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyuAH0RWV4s&list=PL-fWJBYKsR_41IOcwGYpBDqw_H-o1c84q

Holt: And we're back, as it's now 8 PM in the east, and we can now make some more projections.

RICK SANTORUM WINS THE MISSISSIPPI REPUBLICAN PRIMARY

JOHN KERRY WINS THE MISSISSIPPI DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

Holt: An unsurprising victory for both Senator Kerry and Secretary Santorum in the South. Meanwhile, we cannot call either race in the state of Missouri.

Todd: Indeed we can't. The Republican race in Ohio is also still too early to call at this time. Stay tuned.

John Kerry for President

Campaign Ad: The Truth

Quote
I'm John Kerry and I'm running for President, and I'm here to tell you the truth.

Quote
Alex Sink attacked my record on Veterans, my record on veterans are in my arms and in my leg, because that's where I was wounded in Vietnam.

Quote
Senator Brown attacks my record on Civil Rights, well we should let Jesse Jackson say something about that.

Quote
John has the strongest civil rights record in this field, it's not even a question. He's been fighting for rights for all Americans since the 1950's I don't think it's an argument who's right, it's John Kerry that's why he has my vote.

Quote
Folks, I'm running for President, because I won't lie to the American people. I'm not running to be the President for the people who voted for me, I'm the President for all Americans.

Phil Scott Remarks at Naples Roundtable

(March 14th, Major Excerpt)

When it comes to social services, I believe we can create a balance between a responsible fiscal and budgetary policy, and not hurting the most vulnerable. That's what we were able to do in Vermont, we balanced the budget without savage cuts and still cut taxes. So first social security, let me say this today, cause I can see the concerned faces around the table. I will not cut or privatize social security, I will not betray a generation of seniors. People receiving benefits now will continue to receive those benefits, no strings attached, no fine print. In Vermont, we actually slashed the taxes on social security benefits. I'm the only Republican who can make that commitment, you're gonna have congressman Amash, Senator Santorum, come down here with some kind of scheme from Washington that will "restructure" or "reform the financing" of social security, now I don't dismiss these out of hand. We've gotta craft bipartisan solutions to keep social security solvent for the next generation, and we will. I've spoken to Senator Young, Senator Rubio, about putting together a plan right now. But what my opponents are proposing is a steal, plain and simple. Privatizations and cuts that will take benefits from the seniors who need them. And establishment politicians in Washington and in this race are trying and actually doing, they're spending the trust fund on other pork projects and big spending projects in the budget. I propose something different, preserve social security, get seniors they benefits they deserve without red tape or hassle, and keep the trust fund solvent by one, not spending it recklessly on other projects, and work across the aisle to form a long term solvency plan. That's my promise to Floridians, and seniors nationwide.

Lisa Murkowski Comments from Meeting with Navajo Nation Leaders

“One of the greatest honors I’ve had in my time in public service is the support I’ve received from tribal leadership in Alaska. In the senate, I’ve seen firsthand how flippant politicians are with the lives of people from communities that traditionally don’t vote for them, and it’s unacceptable. I cannot think of a more fitting example for the sad state of Washington, than when politicians only care about voters that fit their poll tested demographic strategy. A guiding principle of mine is that we should work to help all people, and not ignore beautiful communities like this one here, and the many I’ve had the privilege of serving in Alaska. As President, I can promise to continue fighting for native communities, working to combat sexual assault, pass legislation to tackle the homicide rate, and keeping the federal government out of the way on local issues. I am honored for the chance to speak here today, visit your community, and ask for your support.”

ALEX SINK SPEAKS AT EVENT IN ARIZONA ABOUT AVERAGE DONATION, GRASSROOTS

Quote

Folks, you didn't know that we had the lowest Donation Rate, didn't you? Our average donation is $16.80. Can you believe that? Everyday Americans are devoted. They're joining the cause for an Affordable America, and one that works for everyone. We've got the lowest donation rate, and the highest rate of spirit. We're not going to win by using Corporations or PACs, we're gonna win by using People Power.

This is true grassroots. This shows that we aren't funded by Washington, we aren't funded by Corporate America or Wall Street, we are funded by We the People. Let's show the world that Governor Scott, Senator Murkowski, and every other Republican are wrong. And so are some of those Democrats. Medicare for All is achievable. Tuition Free College can become a reality. But we need as many as many $16.80 donations as possible. Go to www.Alexsink.com right now and chip in to this cause! We can do it together Arizona!

Phil Scott for President

Phil Scott GOTV Effort for Super Tuesday March 19th

Illinois

Phil Scott will spend primary day in Chicago with Adam Kizinger and Rodney Davis. These downstate Illinois politicians will be spending the morning in their district, in places like Peoria rallying support for Phil Scott, speaking to supporters, and meeting with undecideds. He'll meet with community leaders in troubled areas of the city, and when Kizinger and Davis arrive, he'll meet with volunteers, and drive to polling stations across the state, speaking to voters on line and rally with supporters and volunteers. Illinois is key to the Scott victory strategy, and ads (to be specified), will be aired and reaired across the state).

Florida

Florida is another state key to a Scott victory. Senator Rubio, a key supporter of Phil Scott, will start primary day darting about little Havana, rallying Cuban support for Phil Scott. He'll be conducting Spanish language campaigning across the city. Talking about jobs, taxes, and Phil's ability to restore kidness and civility to politics. Senator Rubio will travel around the city of Miami rallying with volunteers and supporters. Representatives Mario Diaz Balart and Brian Mast will campaign in their respective districts. Murkowski GOTV and Surrogate Schedule

Illinois

Former Senator Mark Kirk spent the majority of his energy in Chicago and its suburbs, working on turning out voters that supported him in his senate elections. The former senator held rallies and recorded a robocall for Senator Murkowski, before hosting the Chicago watch party. Representative Ann Wagner barnstormed southern Illinois, before meeting with volunteers in Springfield, where she canvassed and held a rally for Murkowski. Wagner later joined the Peoria watch party. Finally, Governor Reynolds crossed over from Iowa to focus on rural engagement, before holding a large rally in Peoria on Murkowski’s agricultural policy. The governor would phone bank and rally volunteers on Election Day, before hosting a GOP women watch party with Representative Wagner.

Arizona

Former Senator Jeff Flake was the head of the campaign arm in Arizona, focusing his efforts in Maricopa county. The former senator held rallies across the county, speaking on how Murkowski is the best choice for the state. He co-hosted the watch party in Phoenix, meeting with volunteers and other surrogates in the stage. Senator Mia Love and former Governor Jon Huntsman joined the campaign for Arizona, with Senator Love barnstorming the rural northern portion of the state, and Governor Huntsman working in Tucson. The two would canvass, phone bank, and hold rallies for supporters. Later they joined Flake at the Phoenix watch party, staying in contact with the Senator as results roll in.

Florida

Carlos Curbelo was an early supporter of Lisa Murkowski, and spearheaded her Florida effort. The Representative primarily focused on Miami-Dade, meeting with locals on Murkowski’s maverick positions. He would spend Election Day in Little Havana, working to boost Cuban turnout, a key demographic in Murkowski’s victory strategy. Governor Kay Ivey crossed over into the Florida Panhandle, rallying conservative voters on Murkowski’s position on the second amendment. She held rallies across the panhandle, primarily focusing on rural areas where turnout will be key. Finally, Vice President Paul Ryan made Florida his focus for the campaign, holding rallies in Tampa, Orlando, and Daytona Beach, putting the outreach efforts into supporters of Romney in 2012. The Vice President spent Election Day in Tampa, phone banking and rallying volunteers, before joining the watch party in Atlanta after polls close.

Georgia

The Georgia arm of the Murkowski campaign was a joint endeavor by Representative Karen Handel, Governor Kay Ivey, former Senator Bob Corker, and sitting Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham.  Karen Handel led the outreach in the Atlanta suburbs, giving close attention to her district with rallies, phone banking, and canvassing. Alongside her work in Florida, Governor Kay Ivey focused on rural outreach, touring the parts of Georgia that neighbor Alabama, ending with a rally in Colombus. Former Senator Bob Corker spent his time touring northwestern Georgia, with rallies in Roma, Marietta, and Athens before joining the GOTV effort in Atlanta. Senator Lindsey Graham made targeted outreach to service members, touring bases, meeting with veteran communities, and holding rallies across the northern portion of the state. The campaign believed elevated turnout amongst service members could push Murkowski over the top, similarly to South Carolina and Virginia. Finally, Tim Scott travels to Savannah, rallying supporters on Murkowski’s tax plan and fiscal conservatism. He personally took over the GOTV effort there. Finally, Senator Murkowski herself focused Election Day efforts in Atlanta, meeting with supporters from the suburbs, canvassing the city, and phone banking remotely for not only Georgia, but Illinois, Arizona, and Florida as well. On Election night, Murkowski watched results with her family and Vice President Paul Ryan, before joining the party in Atlanta.

Interview with Senator Cory Booker

March 14, 2020

Degeneres: Good morning, everyone! Welcome to the Ellen Show, where we have a very special guest, Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey! Cory, how are you today?

Booker: I'm wonderful, Ellen. It's great to be on, especially when we're talking about the future of our country.

Degeneres: It really is, Cory. Now, let's get started. Senator, Governor Sink, according to some sources, “crashed and burned” in the most recent primary contest group. Do you believe her likely sizable win in Florida will reinstate her momentum moving forward?

Booker: Well, I don't believe that Governor Sink "crashed and burned." In fact, I think she actually improved on her momentum. She got 27% in Mississippi, a state she never even visited. I believe that Governor Sink will recover from her Delegate Deficit, and she's going to retake the lead. She's only down by 1% in the most recent poll. That compared to last year, where she was at 4%. This is a revolution, and we're going to take it home in the next primary. We're going to win big in Florida, Arizona, Guam, the Mariana Islands, and Illinois. It's going to be her night, and we're going to do it together.

Degeneres: Interesting, very interesting, especially since a lot of those states are viewed as really competitive. Now, obviously, the party’s nominee needs to be a strong general election candidate. How do you respond to the concerns raised by Governor Hogan about the Democratic Socialists of America endorsing Governor Sink?

Booker: Well, let me just say, Governor Hogan calling Governor Sink a "Communist" or even hinting at it is absolutely hilarious. If Governor Sink is a Communist, then why does she continue to work with the people of Florida, with a Republican Legislature. She works bipartisanly everyday, yet she still continues to produce results. That's the kind of President I believe that we all deserve. All the other candidates running, have no interest in being bipartisan. Governor Sink isn't bought by Corporations, she's ready to fight for Us, not them. And for the record, no, she's not a communist.

Degeneres: You hear that, everyone? She's not a Communist!

Audience and Booker: *laughs*

Degeneres: But now on to a question very near and dear to me, in particular. A lot of people have noticed that Senator Baldwin and Mayor Pete have endorsed Senators Brown and Kerry, respectively. Do you think this could be drawing the LGBT vote away from the Governor?

Booker: Absolutely not. Governor Sink is not Anti-LGBT, nor will she ever be. I've been in contact with the Campaign before I endorsed about certain issues, and this was one of my priorities. In the richest country in the world, the most developed country in the world, no one should be scared about coming out as Gay or Bi or anything else. It's absolutely shameful. What worries me the most is if Governor Scott, or Senator Santorum is elected, what they'll do to hurt LGBT Rights. Let's not forget here as well that Governor Sink is endorsed by the largest Gay Rights Organization in America, the Human Rights Organization.

Degeneres: Well, it's good to hear that the Democrats, at least, have fully embraced the LGBT community. So, since we talked about me, let's talk about you a little, Senator. You’ve been mentioned in a few speculative articles, most recently by the New York Times, as a potential Vice President should Governor Sink win the nod. Do you think she’s considering that option?

Booker: I can't comment on whether or not I would be picked as the Vice President, if she wins, but I would hope, that she picks based on policy, ideas, and experience. I've served in the Senate for a while, I was a city councilman, Mayor of Newark, and I think being in a higher office would be very interesting to. I believe, no matter who Governor Sink picks, it's for the best. She's in it for America, and that's why you should join her as well.

Degeneres: Is no news good news? We'll have to wait and see. Finally, Senator, regardless of where you end up should the Governor become the Democratic nominee, how do you rank the Republicans going up against her in the general?

Booker: I would say, that all the Republicans would lose to Governor Sink. Her message, and the movement is too strong to be stopped. President Romney and the Republicans aren't going to Govern for the people, but for themselves. Governor Sink's Presidency is going to be one, of, by, and for the people. If I had to rank, I would say the strongest would be Senator Murkowski, though.

I want to thank you for letting me on, and I hope that everyone watching is ready to join Governor Sink, and I, and everyone else on the campaign trail. Go to www.AlexSink.com and join this movement!

Degeneres: Cory, thanks for being on, it's been so great talking to you.

Booker: And the same to you, Ellen.

Degeneres: And now on to our next story, about Donald Trump's recent rumblings about an independent presidential campaign, and what it means for this coming race.*

*: No, I'm not actually going to make a post about this.

John Kerry for President
Surrogate schedules

Illinois
Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin

Senator Kerry's top surrogate in Illinois is Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, he will focus on appealing to working class voters on Chicago's south side, as well as campaigning heavily among down state population centers including East St Louis, Peoria, Galesburg, and Springfield. He will focus on targeting Lean to Undecided Veterans and members of the working class and securing their votes for Senator Kerry. Coupled with this an extensive Ad buy in Illinois will work towards winning the state for Senator Kerry.

Vice President Joe Biden

Picking up the "working class Joe" mantra again Vice President Biden will hit the campaign trail hard in the next few days focusing on winning the Illinois Democratic Primary for Senator Kerry. He will take a similar path to Senator Durbin effectively targeting undecided working class voters in Chicago's southern suburbs, richer undecided voters on the eastern and western sides of Cook county, and undecided working class voters in Springfield, Peoria, and Galesburg. He will also attempt to appeal more affluent African American suburban voters.

Governor JB Pritzker

Governor Pritzker will campaign exclusively in Chicago, Cook County was his best county in 2018 and he will campaign heavily for Senator Kerry following his endorsement early. He will speak extensively on why Senator Kerry is the best candidate for President and hold 20 events for the Senator. He will focus on appealing to moderate voters, and hammer Governor Sink and Senator Brown on drifting so far to the left. He will campaign primarily among those in the inner city of Chicago.

Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan

Speaker Madigan will announce his endorsement to the public, but he won't campaign actively for the Senator across the state like Governor Pritzker or Senator Durbin. Speaker Madigan will begin gathering his Soldiers and preparing precients on the cities south side to be won for Senator Kerry, he will crush the opposition through sheer organizational efficiency. He will have his prescient committeeman drive the primary towards Kerry and campaign extensively through the south side.

Representative Bobby Rush & Jesse Jackson
Representative Rush and Reverend Jackson will be campaigning among the African Americans of Chicago hoping a victory or close defeat among them will spell victory for Senator Kerry. They will focus on the poorer and more urban areas of the city and focus on courting this crucial demographic which could be seen as a losing battle for Senator Kerry.

Representative Connor Lamb

Representative Lamb will be campaigning across rural Illinois attracting voters who feel disaffected by the fact that the other Democrats are drifting far to the left, he will focus on attracting working class voters in the down part of the state overlapping some of the areas targeted by Vice President Biden and Senator Durbin.

Phil Scott Ad #12: There's a Movement

To air in New York, Illinois, Connecticut, Maine, Virgin Islands, Indiana, Utah, Florida, and South Dakota with small adjustments to shots

Quote

Narrator: There's a new hope on the horizon, a new sunrise.

From the smallest towns....

To the biggest cities.....

Americas work hard every day, they deserve leaders, they deserve service.

Phil Scott speech: We must govern with compassion, govern with respect. When we approach a problem, it can't be through a political lens.

Phil Scott Speech in Background: "Americans don't wake up at 5 and work hard till the evening so that partisan politicians will fail them!"

"Let's aspire to citizenship, let's serve the people, and work for every single American!"

"We can believe in this country. We can accomplish what's best about America and lift us all up..."

"When I look over the green mountains of Vermont, I don't see divisions. I don't see Republicans and Democrats, I don't see racial and cultural division. I see a country of many faces and people, but I see a united fabric of America."

"When we realize that, when we realize we're more then just a country of divided peoples, when we realize that we're together, we're united. That's when people win, that's when we accomplish the beauty of America. That's what this movement is all about."

Voiceover: "I'm Phil Scott and I approve this message."

NBC News Interview with Vice President Paul Ryan
March 15, 2020

Holt: Good evening. I'm Lester Holt, and I'm here with a very special individual tonight: Vice President Paul Ryan. Paul, how are you tonight?

Ryan: I'm doing well, Lester. And you?

Holt: I'm good, too, Paul. Now, obviously, you were a candidate for President yourself just a few months ago, and often considering a low-key frontrunner. What changed that made it so that you’re not up here as a current candidate for President?

Ryan: Thank you for your question. When forming an exploratory committee, I wanted to take a good, hard look at the field, state of the race, and what was best for this country. At the end of the day, I realized it was best for myself and my family to take some time away from public service. I felt and continue to feel strongly that Lisa Murkowski is the strongest candidate we have, and has the best vision for our country’s future, and I’m confident in her ability to be a fantastic president.

Holt: The r-word of politics: retirement. Now, on to a more pressing topic: Senator Murkowski, despite all the naysayers and some weak turnout ahead of Super Tuesday, has rocketed into the lead in delegate count. Do you believe she can hold on through notoriously pro-Scott Florida and New York, not to mention pro-Amash territory in both the South and Plains regions?

Ryan: Senator Murkowski has run one strong campaign, hasn’t she? She’s constantly faced doubters who have underestimated her ability to put together a coalition. I know for a fact she will continue to fight to get her message heard in Florida, New York, the Plains, the South, and everywhere in between. Lisa’s plan for America has been resonating with the primary electorate, with a surprise win in Idaho, solid wins in Ohio and Virginia, and overperformances in Alabama, Missouri, and Kansas. I wouldn’t underestimate her ability to speak directly to the hearts of voters.

Holt: I know we discussed your impending retirement already, but just to reiterate: it’s unlikely the Senator will tap you for a third term as Vice President; what do you intend to do when all this is over?

Ryan: I can’t say I know about Senator Murkowski’s plans for a ticket, as she’s focused on first winning the nomination. However, I think I can speak for not only myself, but also for my family when I say we’re all looking forward to my return to private life. I never have intended to be on politics for my entire life, but I faced the call to serve in the House and then join President Romney on the ticket. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to serve in the ways I have, and I’m excited for the ability to return to Wisconsin and shift my focus to my family, while supporting President Lisa Murkowski as a private citizen.

Holt: Indeed. And speaking of potential Murkowski supporters, recently, Senator Angus King indicated he won’t necessarily endorse the Democratic nominee this year. Do you believe there’s any merit to this, or is it merely a red herring to get the Senator a little media time?

Ryan: I think the fact that a sitting senator, who has caucused with the Democrats, is publicly expressing doubt of whether he can endorse their party’s nominee is indicative of how far left the Democratic Party has gone. I would tell Senator King the same thing that I would any voter put off by the Democratic Party’s extremism; the Republican Party has been and always will be a big tent party. We always have room for new voices.

Holt: Yes, although we have seen some reluctance to embrace that title in recent months. And on that topic, Mr. Vice President, a number of far-right agitators are attempting to encourage Donald Trump to enter the presidential race as an independent. Does the Senator have a contingency plan in case this comes to pass?

Ryan: We’ve heard this before, back in 2012, many in far-right circles spoke about mounting an independent campaign in response to President Romney’s own moderate image. Like the President, Lisa is a maverick. She is conservative on some issues and more moderate on others. I do not doubt that she will protect our Second Amendment rights with the same fervor in which she supports individual freedom. Ultimately, I think that’s the reason she’s running for President, to protect our freedoms. If a candidate has a problem with that, I challenge them to express that and we will let the American public decide.

Holt: Vice President Ryan, thank you so much for being on.

Ryan: My pleasure, Lester.

Holt: And that will be all for tonight. And remember, folks: if you live in Georgia, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, the Northern Mariana Islands, or Guam, your primary or caucus is this coming Tuesday, so don't forget to cast your vote in these highly competitive races. Who knows? You might decide the whole thing. I've been Lester Holt, and thanks for tuning in.
