It seems so facile to me to rush to judgment on a matter like this. Why do our judgments matter? They don't. None of us have any say here. This is one of the most important world events of this century so far and it's something that people will be reading about in history books three hundred years from now, so why is it that people feel so compelled to declare FFs and HPs? Can't we talk about this without the need to make intellectually sterile moral judgments?

the very point of writing vague rules is to allow for selective enforcement.

We all learn differently. Not sure how it's beneficial to uniform and teach math this way and only this way, but I'm sure some people learn it this way.

Yeah, I can understand how the expanded form in addition might help someone, at least when they are starting out.  But at some point, especially with the clunky terminology as shown here, a new approach becomes more confusing and just generally worse than the perceived need for improvement.

I don't disagree with that. And I don't know why there's such a need for this one miracle method of teaching people. People learn in all of sorts of ways, so these one shoe fits all education solutions are garbage.

Unfortunately, some people seem much more whiny about other members' posts than they did a year or so ago. Can we talk about that?

As I said here:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=188900.msg4086941#msg4086941

in 1988, E.J. Dionne wrote about the Democrat's demographic crisis, since the GOP had an advantage among the young at that time.  By ~1990/1991, when the GOP had won three consecutive presidential elections and Bush was riding high on Gulf War glory, people were talking about the GOP's insurmountable lock on the presidency.

Then after Clinton won two presidential elections, it was all doom and gloom for the GOP, and then the CW switched again after Bush's 2004 win, when Dems half joked about secession of Democratic states from the USA, and many here on Atlas insisted that the Dems would need to nominate an Evan Bayh or a Mark Warner if they wanted any hope of winning a presidential election soon.

Basically, every time a party wins two or more presidential elections in a row, there's a lot of talk about that party's enormous structural advantage, and how the opposition party is doomed.

It was always obvious the Tea Party was just a sore loser movement of McCain voters. If they cared so much about the deficit, they would've been at Bush's throat constantly. But that was okay because he was an (R).

This is pretty funny.

I do wish that people would drop this idea that being white automatically means being privileged. It's such a white middle-class-and-upwards thing to think.

I mean, and not to say I like the man, but Reagan at least wasn't removed enough to seriously campaign on "NO NEW TAXES!" when he ran for President.

That's because Bush was willing to say anything to get elected. He wasn't just inheriting the consequences of over a decade of mismanagement under Reagan/Carter when he became President; he also inherited a Republican Party that had been whipped into an anti-government frenzy by his predecessor. (I don't see a lot of evidence that Bush had actual political views of his own; the Mitt Romney comparison is almost too obvious.)

She's Al Gore Part II if she runs.  We're (and by this I mean Democrats) just going to give it to her.  I do think she'll be an effective leader.  We might be years removed from her crusade for healthcare reform as First Lady, but I feel she's still progressive at heart.

The President is only as liberal/conservative as the Congress that sends her the legislation. Hillary would bring a strongly Democratic wave with her into Washington.

If you're progressive, you'd be better off with Hillary than a "true believer" who spends their entire term arguing with a Republican Congress.

Without "Same Love", the music industry wouldn't be able to bravely congratulate itself on how progressive it is.

Are Stalin and the like even "True Leftists". A True Leftist, as I understand it, is somebody who refuses to support mainstream parties and instead harangues about "neoliberals" and the like. You can't be a True Leftist in power, because True Leftism rejects those in power as not good enough.

And I think most "True Leftists" don't particularly admire the USSR and instead plum for, say, Revolutionary Catalonia or the Paris commune.

So a failure vs. unquestionably the Greatest South African?

John Brown didn't fail. His actions sped up the destruction of slavery.

The Republican Party dies. The olds are eliminated by death panels and those who remain are rounded up and put in FEMA camps.
Oddly enough, this seems like your average post.

Frequently, they're not murderers... often they're political dissidents.

Not in the US, they aren't.

There is a significant number of innocent people in US jails.

Better get rid of jails then?

If someone is mistakely jailed, we can free him. If someone was mistakely executed, we can't revive him.

I don't really think people should call others morons, and especially in all caps.

I don't really think people should be morons, regardless of font size.
Yeah, but that was just mean spirited and rude.

I think it's rude by NYE to post here. Tongue

I think a good life rule if you don't want to be called a moron is to not be one. Rather than complaining about others pointing out your flaws.

You tend to consider a lot of behaviour moronic that other people wouldn't, so you are not the best judge of this.

Conservatives want free speech without consequences. You have a right to shout at the top of your lungs in a crowded room, but you shouldn't act shocked when some people think you're an a-hole.
