Former O'Connor MP Wilson "Ironbar" Tuckey offers his thoughts on Kevin Rudd, Peter Beattie, and the upcoming federal election.

When is the debate between Rudd and Abbott scheduled?

Debate's tomorrow evening at the National Press Club. Probably won't move the needle unless someone gaffes.

Why would anyone want to hear the 'thoughts' of that disgusting racist thug? The sooner he dies the better.

Can someone post a link of the debate?  Not sure if I get it here in America.

I'd doubt they'd undo the geo-lock for the debate

I keep forgetting that.

Regardless of the fact that they needed to be dumped, dumping candidates is always a very bad look.

The Debate will dominate tonight and tomorrow and the PEFO will do Tuesday and Wednesday - it's not great, but could be worse

Is that Abbott tapping his pen during KRudd's opening?

Speaking of irritating, I'm not happy with Rudd's reliance on notes.

Abbott is doing pretty well... not unexpectedly

I'm watching the worm more than the debate. Rudd is pretty much maxing out on every issue, Abbott is floating around the midpoint half the time, and under the other half.

OK, so apparently the channel 7 worm is online, anyone can access. I believe 9's in a representative group. 9's is hugely pro-Rudd, 7's is pro-Abbott, and 10's is roughly neutral. Not sure how 10's doing theirs.

Which worm are you seeing?

Overall - Abbott looked a lot more prepared ... Rudd was too reliant on notes and could have walloped Abbott on costings but kept going back to the GST.

I'd give it Abbott - but not decively

I'd give it to Abbott as well, although I may be a tad biased in my opinion.

Seven poll (which was publicly 'tweakable') had Abbott with a massive win.
Nine reaction was strong for Rudd
It seems 10 didn't like anyone...

I think public response is lean Rudd overall ... but also people were overwhelmed by how BORING it was. I think it's a sign that both people know this is line-ball... no one felt any comfort to take a chance.

The big question was, was it better than the 2010 debate? I never watch debates now.

Actually I think 2010 was slightly more interesting...

My thoughts are - neither delivered a knockout, a clear win for Rudd would have put more focus on Abbott, a clear win for Abbott probably would have started to make Rudd look like a bit of a lame-duck. So if the public is to be believed and this was a tie/lean Rudd - it's not great result for either, but Abbott comes out with any advantage if any because Rudd would be perceived as under-performing.

I will say Rudd's commitment to a Marriage Equality Bill within 100 days... is interesting. A Bill with Rudd's support would put the Liberal party room in a tricky spot. I did find Abbott's response of "it's an important issue, but we have more pressing issues" pretty empty.

Newspoll is out... headlines are unchanged at 52-48... considering the primary votes 35/46 (-2/+2) ... the Greens must have spiked.

Rudd's lead as preferred PM is apparently down to 9, 46-37...

Hmmm... not sure what to make of it.

Rudd's approvals and PPM are falling. Looks like a stall to me, though of course this is only Week 2.
