Yesterday, I accidentally enabled site autorization… requiring visitors to enter a password to access the site. This was an error and was corrected this morning. I apologize to those who were unable to access the material during this time.
1999 Gubernatorial Elections
I have added the results of the 1999 Gubernatorial Elections. Only three states (KY, LA, and MS) hold their election for Governor in this off year. These offices are up for re-election in November. Results of the 2003 Gubernatorial races will be added to the site in the fall/winter.
California Recall
For those of you wondering whether I’ll add maps and results for the California recall, the answer is: How could I not? Such an election doesn’t happen every day (good thing too, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do anything else!) I started adding Gubernatorial election results starting in 2002. I plan to add pages for the special California recall election and will also cover the three Gubernatorial elections in November (both the 1999 and 2003 results).
Updated 2000 Data Spreadsheet
I have updated the 2000 Spreadsheet. The file is located on the store download page. If you have already purchased a copy, you may download and uncompress the update using the same password as was emailed to you after your purchase. The updates include:
• Alabama: Data for Barbour county changes significantly per updated data on Alabama Secretary of State web site
• Colorado: Bush in Phillips county changes from 1576 to 1573 per CO Official Abstract
• Mississippi: Data for Grenada county changes significantly per MS Official and Statistical Register
• Ohio: Data for Cuyahoga county changes marginally per Ohio Election Statistics
• Updates to the Data Sources sheet
Note that these changes are already reflected in the on-line data files.
More corrections
Thanks to Dave (a different Dave) for pointing out the malfunctioning Bellwether page. I, from time to time, update the site and miss one of the links. Reporting site bugs is always appreciated. Also fixed 1984 mouse-over functionality.
1988 Data Spreadsheet Available
I have completed the massive data spreadsheet for the 1988 general election and have made it available through the store. The price is a little higher than the others due to the large amount of effort required to research and enter the data.
Survey
Thanks to all of you who took the time to fill out the site survey. I have removed the pop-up window (to many cheers, I’m sure). There are over 1500 entries and many good comments and suggestions. I have posted a quick tabulation of the results of the survey questions at :
http://www.uselectionatlas.org/BOTTOM/survey_res.php
I may also produce a county map showing the locations of the respondents.
Fixed Pages
Thanks to Eric Nyman for pointing out that the Gubernatorial pages were broken. I’ve fixed these. I also noticed that the javascript mouse-over maps for the 2000 general election summary page wasn’t functioning. This is also fixed.
2000 Vote in Cities
One of the new topics in the forum this week included a request to view data for the 2000 Vote for President by city. Although I don’t have data for all the cities listed in the post, I have created a list of selected cities where I have data (these include states with official county subdivisions and precinct-level data that I have obtained). The list may be found here: http://www.uselectionatlas.org/USPRESIDENT/GENERAL/PE2000/pe2000cities.html
This list is not yet linked in from the main pages yet. If you know of additional data available for a city not listed, please let me know.
2000 Registration and Turnout
Today, I updated (finally!) the 2000 Voter Registration and Turnout data and maps. Tennessee data is still not correct, though as the numbers are from December 1 and not prior to the November 7 election.
Registration data tends to be very suspect in my eyes. Differences between active and inactive (or suspense – depending on state), when and how voter rolls are purged, etc. tend to lead to significant inaccuracies. For example, Wyoming had 220,012 voters registered for 2000 and 218,351 votes cast (including the 4,625 (2.1%) votes cast as write-ins for Ralph Nader) – a whopping 99.3% voter turnout!
